Silksong Crosses Seven Million Sales As Team Cherry Prepares Free Expansion
Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold more than seven million copies in just over three months, according to developer Team Cherry. The figure reflects paid sales across platforms and does not include players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass, where the studio says “millions more” have played since launch. The milestone places Silksong among the strongest commercial releases of the year, especially for a game priced at $20.
The result follows years of anticipation. Silksong spent much of its pre-release life at or near the top of Steam’s most-wishlisted charts, building a large audience long before its arrival. When the game finally launched in September, demand was immediate. Sales volume on release day was high enough to briefly disrupt Steam’s storefront, a rare outcome for a 2D action-platformer developed by a small independent team.
Team Cherry shared the sales figures alongside confirmation that a free expansion is in development and planned for release next year. While no concrete details were disclosed, the announcement reinforces the studio’s intention to continue active support rather than move quickly to a new project.
“It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected,” Team Cherry said.
The studio pointed to the community response as a major factor behind its continued momentum, citing fan art, mods, and player-driven experimentation as evidence that the game has settled into a long tail rather than burning out after launch.
“Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home,” the studio said. “Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.”— Team Cherry
Despite its success, Silksong is not the year’s top-selling game. Battlefield 6 reportedly matched similar sales figures within its first three days, and indie breakout Peak has surpassed 14 million copies since launch. Even so, Silksong’s performance stands out given its genre, scope, and pricing. At $20, the game undercuts most major releases, a choice that may have limited per-unit revenue but widened its audience significantly.
Game Pass has further extended that reach. While Microsoft does not release detailed player counts, Team Cherry’s acknowledgment of “millions more” players suggests the subscription audience rivals or exceeds a substantial share of paid sales. That exposure may also feed future expansion engagement when new content arrives.
