Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Celebrates 5 Million Sales with a Free ‘Thank You’ Update

Sandfall Interactive has announced a new free update for its acclaimed title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as the game surpasses 5 million copies sold across all platforms. The update, described by game director Guillaume Broche as “a bit of whee, and a bit of whoo,” is set to add new content and quality-of-life features inspired by fan feedback, while also paying tribute to the community’s ongoing support.

Broche confirmed in an interview with Eurogamer that the update is being developed as a gesture of appreciation rather than a large-scale expansion.

“We are working on a big ‘thank you’ update for the game actively, that we will release when it’s ready,” he said. “We want to prepare an update to say a big thank you to our players, because it’s thanks to our players that we are in such a comfortable situation now. They brought us so much emotion and gave us so much love in return for the game that we want to address that and make a big thank you update with new content, new enemies, new stuff to do for every type of player.” — Guillaume Broche

The upcoming update will not be a traditional DLC but a free content patch featuring new activities and collectibles. Broche explained that the goal is to enrich the existing world with meaningful additions. “It’s not a super big DLC extension with hours of content. It’s more of a thank-you gift from us. You will have quite a few things to do and collect… some quality of life that are very highly requested by the community.” — Guillaume Broche

Among the confirmed features are a new location filled with fresh enemy encounters, late-game boss battles, and new costumes for every party member. The update will also introduce extended localisation support, adding new text and UI translations in Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian. According to the studio, players can expect “even more surprises” that will be revealed closer to the update’s release.

The developer also released new concept artwork teasing various items and symbols from the game’s world, hinting at secrets fans might discover once the update goes live. The studio previously teased these enhancements in June, mentioning accessibility improvements, additional languages, and gameplay refinements. Those earlier “bits and bobs” now appear to be folded into this upcoming free release.

The most intriguing detail from Broche’s comments suggests the return of Esquie, the masked mount creature that became an unexpected mascot among fans. Community memes and discussions have turned Esquie into a cultural symbol of the game, and Broche’s teasing of “a bit of whee, and a bit of whoo” has only amplified expectations that the mount will play a larger role in the new content.

Sandfall Interactive’s commitment to improving accessibility has been a consistent message throughout the year. In a June post on social media, the studio stated it was “currently exploring a wide range of future improvements — from accessibility features to new content and all sorts of bits and bobs we’re actively assessing.” Fans have long requested additional features such as a photo mode, expanded DLC, and more diverse character outfits. Broche previously clarified to The Washington Post that while major DLC is not a priority, ongoing improvements to the core game remain the studio’s main focus.

This new update continues a pattern of steady post-launch support that helped solidify Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s reputation. Following its release earlier this year, the game became a breakout success thanks to its blend of artistic visuals, turn-based combat, and narrative style rooted in poetic surrealism. Within its first month, it sold 3.3 million copies, and by October, that number rose to over 5 million — a milestone Sandfall is now celebrating with the community that made it possible.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 leads the nominations at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025, where player voting is now open across 21 categories in one of gaming’s most celebrated annual events.

With award season approaching, Expedition 33 remains a strong contender for multiple Game of the Year honors, further driven by its distinctive direction and strong fan engagement. Sandfall’s approach — balancing artistic ambition with steady community updates — has helped maintain player interest months after release.
