Sony Raises PS5 Prices Again in Europe, Australia, & NZ – Here’s What’s Changing

If you're planning to grab a PS5 soon and you're in Europe, Australia, or New Zealand — you might want to act fast or brace for impact. Sony just bumped up the recommended retail prices (RRP) of several PlayStation 5 models again, marking the second time prices have risen in these territories since launch.

The update went live on April 14 and was announced via the official PlayStation Blog.

This new round of increases mainly targets the Digital Edition of the PS5, while the standard disc version remains largely untouched — except in Australia and New Zealand, where both versions saw a price hike. Interestingly, the upcoming PS5 Pro isn’t affected and retains its previously announced price.

According to Sony, the reason behind the new pricing is “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.” It’s a familiar explanation — the same logic was used when the PS5 first saw regional price hikes in 2022.

The PS5 Digital Edition is taking the biggest hit, especially in New Zealand, where it's now NZD $210 more than launch. In Australia, the digital model went up by AUD $150 — a 25% increase over the original price. For a console that’s nearly five years old, that’s not a small jump.

Some Retailers Are Pushing Back (A Little)

If you’re in the UK, you might still be able to dodge the full brunt of these price changes. Argos is offering a PS5 bundle (disc edition + Astro Bot) for £430 — the same price as Sony’s new Digital Edition, but with more value. EE also has a deal on the Digital Edition with Astro Bot for just £329, which is a full £100 cheaper than Sony's new RRP. Expect these deals to disappear fast as Sony’s pricing takes hold across retail partners.

“In some markets, retailers are still offering legacy bundles or promotional pricing, but that won’t last forever,” a reseller told IGN anonymously. “Once our current stock clears, we’re matching the new RRPs.”

PS5 Pricing vs Competition

This pricing bump adds fuel to the ongoing console war — especially when compared to Microsoft’s current pricing on the Xbox Series X and Series S. The Series S remains the most budget-friendly console this generation, and while the Series X still retails around £480–£500 in many territories, Microsoft has been more aggressive with bundling and discounts in recent months.

Nintendo’s Switch also remains in a more affordable tier, and with the Switch 2 expected to launch in 2025, that could be another headache for Sony if they can’t justify their pricing with major first-party releases or fresh hardware.

What About the PS5 Pro?

Notably, the PS5 Pro — expected to drop later this year — has not seen a price change. That’s good news for those holding out for a more powerful machine. Still, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the final pricing for the Pro model in every region, so that situation could evolve depending on market reactions to these new Digital Edition numbers.

Why Is Sony Doing This?

Let’s break it down. Inflation is real, and exchange rates have been rough on companies operating globally. But what’s hard to swallow is that the PS5 isn’t exactly a brand-new product anymore. These price hikes come at a time when most consumers expect prices to drop — especially with a new console refresh looming.

Sony is betting that its market dominance and exclusive library will keep people buying — even at a premium. But it’s also risking consumer goodwill, especially in regions that already had some of the highest PS5 prices globally.

If you're in Europe, Australia, or NZ and thinking about buying a PS5, either grab it now before all retailers match Sony’s new RRPs — or consider waiting for the Pro. Or, honestly? Keep an eye on Xbox deals. This console generation just got a little more expensive.
