Roblox Unveils Open-Source AI Model Cube 3D for Text-Based 3D Creation

Roblox has announced the open-source release of Cube 3D, a cutting-edge AI model that allows developers to generate 3D objects and environments directly from text prompts. This new technology is set to revolutionize content creation on the platform, enabling faster and more intuitive asset development.

As part of the launch, Roblox has introduced the Mesh Generation API in beta, giving developers early access to Cube 3D’s capabilities and streamlining 3D asset creation.

AI-Powered 3D Creation with Cube 3D

Unlike traditional methods that rely on 2D image reconstruction, Cube 3D is trained on native 3D data from Roblox itself. The model tokenizes 3D objects, much like large language models (LLMs) process words, allowing it to:

Predict and generate complete 3D objects from text-based inputs.

Extend to full scene generation, where it predicts layouts and recursively builds shapes.

Be fine-tuned and customized by developers to suit their own needs.

Future versions of Cube 3D will expand beyond text prompts, allowing for 3D model and environment creation from images. Roblox sees this as a foundational step toward a more advanced AI-powered creative ecosystem.

How Cube 3D Empowers Developers

Over the past year, Roblox has integrated AI tools into its development suite, including an AI Assistant designed to accelerate 3D asset creation. The introduction of Cube 3D and the Mesh Generation API further enhances this by automating the tedious aspects of game design, allowing creators to:

  • Generate 3D assets in seconds using simple text descriptions.
  • Refine assets with textures, colors, and details within game engines.
  • Speed up iteration cycles and focus on high-level design.

Roblox believes Cube 3D will significantly reduce the time required for asset creation, paving the way for larger and more complex interactive environments.

Roblox’s Vision for AI-Driven Game Development

In a blog post announcing Cube 3D, Anupam Singh (VP of Engineering) and Nick Tornow (VP of Creator Engineering) stated:

“We see a future where developers enable their users to become creators using AI. With the Mesh Generation API enabled, players can bring to life anything they can imagine… Players can personalize their experience in ways developers never imagined, and that’s going to make their games even more engaging.”

To achieve this, Roblox has developed a unified AI architecture using autoregressive transformers, allowing Cube 3D to:

  • Scale efficiently across different media types (text, visuals, audio, and 3D).
  • Support multimodal compatibility, making it adaptable to future AI advancements.
  • Be open-source, allowing creators to experiment and develop new applications.

The Future of Cube 3D – Beyond Object Generation

Roblox envisions Cube 3D evolving into a comprehensive AI-driven creation system, eventually enabling:

  • Full scene generation, where AI assists with layout design and object placement.
  • "4D creation", where AI-generated objects interact dynamically within virtual environments.
  • In-game AI generation, allowing players to customize and create assets in real-time.

With Cube 3D, Roblox aims to push the boundaries of AI-assisted game development, making 3D content creation more accessible than ever.

The open-source version of Cube 3D will be available later this week, offering developers an early look at Roblox’s next-generation AI technology.
