No More Room in Hell 2's 'Nightmare' Update Adds Weapon Attachments, Expanded Map, and Hardcore Mode
No More Room in Hell 2, the zombie survival shooter that launched into Steam Early Access last year, has received its biggest update yet. Dubbed the 'Nightmare' update, the patch introduces weapon customization, an expanded map, and a hardcore difficulty mode designed to push even the most seasoned survivors to their limits.
The highlight of the update is the long-requested weapon attachment system. Players can now equip their firearms with sights, flashlights, and silencers – an invaluable addition in a game where noise can be as deadly as the undead lurking in the dark. While magnifying scopes remain absent, developers at Torn Banner assure fans that more attachments will arrive in future updates.
The game’s Power Plant map has also been overhauled with new beginning and ending scenarios. Players must now locate radios instead of laptops to gain access to the facility, and instead of simply restarting a generator, survivors will need to repair multiple parts of the plant’s infrastructure. These changes aim to enhance replayability, a point of contention since launch due to the limited number of maps.

For those seeking a true test of survival, the update reworks Nightmare difficulty with a suite of brutal new modifiers. A stripped-down UI removes objective markers and interaction prompts, while thick fog engulfs the map, making navigation even more perilous. Successfully completing Nightmare mode now rewards players with 'Nightmare Prestige Points' - a bragging-rights system for those who endure the game's most punishing experience.
Additional features include a new melee weapon – the shovel – jump scares in select locations, and eerie infection audio hallucinations that intensify the horror as players succumb to the virus. A lengthy list of bug fixes accompanies the update, addressing visual glitches, UI issues, and zombie behavior. One notable fix ensures that players “should no longer spawn into matches without a body,” though in a zombie apocalypse, lacking a torso might have had its advantages. Meanwhile, Torn Banner also notes that a previously discovered naked zombie near Lookout Tower has now been redressed, adding, "Our thoughts are with that responder."
Despite these improvements, No More Room in Hell 2 continues to struggle with its player count. Steam Charts data shows only 111 concurrent players at the time of writing, a stark drop from its all-time peak of 1,998. Several recent Steam reviews have described the game as "dead," raising questions about its long-term viability.
The original No More Room in Hell, a 2012 Half-Life 2 mod, built a dedicated cult following thanks to its tension-filled survival mechanics and cooperative gameplay. However, its sequel faced backlash from longtime fans for diverging from its predecessor’s design while also launching with numerous technical issues.
Whether the 'Nightmare' update can revive interest remains uncertain, but for those still battling the undead, these additions at least offer more depth and challenge. Unless the game sees a dramatic surge in player engagement, No More Room in Hell 2 risks an untimely demise - this time, for good.
