New Football Video Game from 2K Could Be Cancelled Following a Breakdown In Negotiations

The recently launched 2026 FIFA World Cup has undoubtedly brought together football fans from all corners of the globe. It has likely also boosted the number of players engaging with football simulation games, especially EA Sports FC. The Electronic Arts gaming series has long dominated this genre, and it seems that their potential competitor, 2K, has lost the chance to challenge them.

According to information from Sports Gamers Online, recent negotiations took place between the studio 2K and parties involved in a football simulator project rumored to have been in development for several years under the name FIFA, following Electronic Arts' loss of the trademark rights. However, the source claims that the talks have reached a deadlock, and the game's future currently remains uncertain. It is said that both sides discussed various possibilities for the new FIFA video game, including different gameplay modes and licensing options, and even considered signing a 10-year contract. Now, there is a chance that 2K may scrap these plans entirely and cancel the game.

One possible reason why 2K and FIFA have yet to reach an agreement is FIFA’s desire to release projects that are closely tied to the upcoming World Cup—which is why they recently partnered with Netflix to launch the game FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition. However, there have been no official statements from either 2K or FIFA so far, so this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
