S1mple took first place in the HLTV rankings. ZywOo and NiKo - 2 and 3
Today we will tell you about three esports players who were the last to be included in the list of the top 20 CS:GO players of 2021 according to HLTV.
3rd place — Nikola 'NiKo' Kovacs (G2 Esports)
G2 Esports player Nikola 'NiKo' Kovac took third place in the HLTV ranking. At the end of October 2020, one of the most sensational announcements of that year took place: "NiKo is moving to G2 Esports and will now play alongside his cousin Nemanja 'huNter-' Kovac." Someone reacted to this with a certain amount of skepticism, and someone - with enthusiasm. However, everyone agreed that now watching G2 will be much more interesting than before. Initially, the team could not show impressive results and the esports players needed time to play, and when 2021 came, he made it clear that the transition of NiKo definitely strengthened the team. Although G2 Esports did not manage to win any major championship, the team has repeatedly won prizes in various tournaments. Silver prizes at Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2021 and the only major tournament held in 2021, PGL Major Stockholm 2021, is a great achievement for the team and Nikola 'NiKo' Kovacs is a direct reason for this. He ended the year with a 1.21 rating and his kills per round hit 0.78. Regarding the latter, by the way, NiKo is ranked 3rd in this indicator among all cybersportsmen. Kovacs also helped his team take 3rd place at DreamHack Masters Spring 2021, FLASHPOINT Season 3, Intel Extreme Masters Summer 2021, BLAST Spring Finals 2021 and Intel Extreme Masters Winter 2021 and achieve other results in various championships. NiKo was unable to get any MVP as his team never came to victory, however his merit in achieving success was noticed and he received the EVP award nine times at the following events: DreamHack Masters Spring 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Summer 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2021, PGL Major Stockholm 2021, BLAST Premier World Final 2021, FLASHPOINT Season 3, BLAST Premier Spring Final 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Fall EU 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Winter 2021.
Among his other special merits, the following can be noted:
- rating against top 5 opponents - 1.23 (2nd place in this indicator)
- rating at especially large championships - 1.26 (3rd place in this indicator)
- rating in significant matches - 1.20 (3rd place in this indicator)
- impact rating — 1.32 (4th place in this indicator)
- entry kills in the round - 0.15 (4th place in this indicator)
2nd place — Mathieu 'ZywOo' Herbault (Team Vitality)
Far from everyone succeeds in showing such stability as that of the French e-sportsman. Mathieu Herbault has been in the top 20 best players of the year for the third year in a row. It is noteworthy that until 2020 he did not appear in the ranking at all and showed his face by immediately taking first place. Twice. In 2021, he showed an incredible individual form, but now he still lost to his main opponent Alexander 's1mple' Kostylev. The success of the latter can be attributed not only to individual abilities, but also to the results of the team shown throughout 2021. In the case of Team Vitality, the story turned out to be more modest. ZywOo and his teammates were able to win the Intel Extreme Masters Winter 2021, as well as place second in events such as ESL Pro LEague Season 14 and BLAST Premier Fall Final 2021 and become a bronze medalist in the following championships: BLSAT Premier Global Final 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Summer 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Fall EU 2021, BLAST Premier World FInal 2021. At IEM Winter 2021, the editors of HLTV drew attention to ZywOo's special achievements and awarded him the MVP status of the only major championship in which Vitality won. In all other events, including BLAST Premier Global Final 2020, IEM Summer 2021, DH Masters Spring, PGL Major Stockholm 2021 and others, he received the title of EVP.
Paying attention to the individual indicators of Mathieu Herbault, you can find that in many aspects he exceeds almost all CS:GO players, and in some he even takes the first place. For example, he can be called a real French El Pistoliero, since he has no equal in the use of secondary weapons - the rating in pistol rounds is 1.46 (first place in this indicator).
The list of other notable personal achievements is as follows:
- rating at especially large championships - 1.27 (2nd place in this indicator)

1st place — Alexander 's1mple' Kostylev (Natus Vincere)
The best season for s1mple, the best year for Natus Vincere, both the players and the organization as a whole. 2021 was indeed the most productive for NaVi, which was repeatedly mentioned both by Kostylev himself and by other representatives of the Ukrainian esports organization. Last year, s1mple was able to surpass himself and achieve the most significant heights in his career. Now his haters who fell in love with the “[insertherethenameofanyplayerwhowonMajor]– 1 major, s1mple – 0 majors” meme have no arguments left against the Ukrainian esportsman. s1mple's dream came true. It is noteworthy that he managed to win not just a Major tournament, but the first Valve CS:GO championship with a prize pool of $2,000,000. In addition, he, along with his teammates, managed to win the third season of the Intel Grand Slam and receive a $1,000,000 cash bonus for the team. Recall that earlier in 2019, Astralis and Team Liquid managed to achieve this. The past year has almost overflowed the bowl with its content of winning MVP and EVP titles. Alexander is perhaps the only player who received more MVP than EVP. Natus Vincere has victories at BLAST Premier Global Final 2020, DreamHack Masters Spring 2021, StarLadder CIS RMR 2021, Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2021, ESL Pro League Season 14, BLAST Premier Fall Final 2021, BLAST Premier World Final 2021 and of course PGL Major Stockholm 2021. The team took second place at BLAST Premier Spring Final 2021 and Intel Extreme Masters Fall CIS 2021. S1mple received eight MVP titles in all tournaments in which NAVI won. At such events as IEM Katowice 2021, EPIC League CIS 2021, IEM Fall CIS, ESL Pro League Season 13 and BLAST Premier Spring Final 2021, he earned EVP status. By many indicators, s1mple is almost twice the average CS:GO player in terms of survivability, kills per round, rating, and others.
It’s not for nothing that Alexander is called a “killing machine” - the number of frags made per round in official matches reaches a record value of 0.88. It is also interesting that the average damage inflicted per round is equal to 88.2 units. The rating for 2021 of Kostylev is 1.35. In many individual indicators, he outperformed all other players. There are also moments in which he is significantly inferior to other esportsmen, but there are quite a few of them.

It is noteworthy that as soon as HLTV began to name the top twenty players of the past year, Alexander immediately admitted that it would not be a surprise for him to take first place in this annual top 20. Despite this, the Ukrainian believes that this is a huge merit of the assembled team in 2021. According to Kostylev, it is this example of Natus Vincere that allows him to fully reveal himself, and each of the players is in his place and plays his role perfectly. Recall that Valery 'b1t' Vakhovsky was the last player to join the team, who took the place of Denis 'flamie' Vasiliev.
