New Call of Duty Game Is Confirmed to Be a Sub-Franchise

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the latest installment in the iconic first-person shooter series and the final chapter of the sub-franchise rebooted in 2019, releases this week. Pre-order customers already have early access and have given it fairly positive reviews. Activision, the publisher, has also revealed that the new game will kick off a new sub-series.

This came out in an interview Activision Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl gave to The Game Business. He confirmed earlier speculation that Modern Warfare 4 will be the last game in the sub-franchise. He also revealed that the next game, set for release in 2027, will start a new series, and the groundwork for it has already been laid.

The game is reportedly planned for 2027.

Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Advanced Warfare, WWII, and Vanguard, is reportedly developing the new game. Official details are unknown, but early rumors claim it will have an entirely new story set in the 1990s and no zombie mode.

As for Modern Warfare 4, it has high ratings on Steam and is the highest-rated game in the franchise since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in 2010. Players especially praise the single-player campaign, calling it one of the best of all time. The full release is on October 23 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.

A Call of Duty film is also confirmed to be in development. Director Peter Berg has revealed it will be set in the Modern Warfare universe, though he didn’t clarify whether this means the original trilogy or the 2019 soft reboot. The film premieres on June 30, 2028.
