New Story, Set In 1990s and No Zombies: Call of Duty 2027 Details Reportedly Revealed

While Call of Duty fans around the world eagerly await Modern Warfare 4—the newly announced installment developed by Infinity Ward—early details are already circulating online about another game set to release next year. Based on the initial information, Activision is preparing an ambitious new project that will be completely different from the familiar entries in the franchise.

According to PlayStation insider TCMFGames, the next installment of Call of Duty, scheduled for release in 2027, is being developed by Sledgehammer Games—the studio behind Call of Duty: WWII, Call of Duty: Vanguard, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). The game is said to have an entirely new subtitle, indicating that its storyline will be unrelated to either the Modern Warfare or Black Ops series. It appears the setting will be grounded and realistic, as the events will take place in the 1990s, and the game will not feature any zombie modes.

Interestingly, recent information has surfaced revealing that Sledgehammer Games had planned to turn Call of Duty: Vanguard into an entire trilogy. However, this never came to be due to a variety of factors. The primary and most significant reason was poor sales, but the game also faced criticism for its secondary storyline and numerous historical inaccuracies.

As for the Call of Duty game releasing in 2026, Modern Warfare 4, the developers have decided to center the storyline around a full-scale invasion of South Korea by North Korea. Players will take on the role of a new character, Private Park, who is facing the realities of a major war for the first time in his life. Additionally, a key role will be played by franchise veteran Captain Price, with the story also being told from his perspective.

Recently, Infinity Ward also gave the first look at the DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 —an essential feature of the upcoming game, which the studio is heavily invested in and promises to support for many years to come. Additionally, a Call of Duty movie is in the works, directed by Peter Berg (known for Hancock, Battleship, and Mile 22), with its premiere scheduled for June 30, 2028.
