Call of Duty: Ghosts Was Considered as a Prequel to Modern Warfare

Developed by Infinity Ward and released back in 2013, Call of Duty: Ghosts is one of the most underrated Call of Duty titles in terms of story campaign. There were rumors that Activision considered making the sequel to the game, but the ideas reportedly got scrapped. It’s also been revealed that Ghosts should have received a strong connection to Modern Warfare game series.

According to the original concept, Call of Duty: Ghosts was set to be a prequel to Modern Warfare franchise (original trilogy) and reveal the origin story of Simon Riley, aka Ghost, who made his debut in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, the studio has decided to go in another direction, as revealed via a Call of Duty fan account on X social media, Awesome CoD Zombies Facts, as you can check out below:

“CoD Modern Warfare Fact: Call of Duty: Ghosts was originally intended to be a prequel to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, and the origin story of Simon Riley. This idea was scrapped very early in development.”

It makes sense that Call of Duty: Ghosts could have had some connection to Modern Warfare and the character himself; plus, Infinity Ward, the studio responsible for the original Modern Warfare titles, was developing Call of Duty: Ghosts. Instead, the storyline of the game was focused on the conflict between the United States and the Federation of the Americas—a military faction that used space weapons to attack and, as a result, tried to occupy the country.

As for the next Call of Duty title, it is also rumored to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity War. The game is not announced yet, but, according to latest report, the release date is eyed for this October.
