Early Appearance of PlayStation-Exclusive Oni Operator Surprises Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Players on Xbox and PC
Some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players on Xbox and PC were surprised to find the early appearance of the PlayStation-exclusive multiplayer character, Oni, in their operator roster. Oni, belonging to Call of Duty's KorTac faction, was scheduled to be available to Xbox and PC players on October 27, a year after the launch of Modern Warfare 2.
Currently, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is in its sixth and final season, featuring a Spawn-themed battle pass, two new 6v6 maps, a Gunfight map, three new weapons, and more. The highlight of Season 6 is the Halloween-themed Haunting event, featuring crossovers with iconic horror characters and IPs like Ash Williams from Evil Dead, Lilith and Inarius from Diablo, and Alucard from Hellsing. Additionally, the collaboration with Diablo allows Call of Duty players to find and defeat The Butcher in Warzone to obtain a special transmog cosmetic for use in Diablo 4.
With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's one-year anniversary approaching, some Xbox and PC players have reported seeing Oni in their operator menus after a recent update. However, while the PlayStation exclusive operator appears unlocked, some players mentioned that they couldn't equip the operator on these platforms. It's worth noting that only the base Oni skin appears unlocked, not any of his additional skins.
Despite Xbox's recent purchase of Activision, the apparent early appearance of Oni is likely a mistake, as Xbox's full control over Call of Duty isn't expected until 2024. Moreover, PlayStation retains exclusive marketing rights for Call of Duty through Modern Warfare 3 and has confirmed an exclusive operator named Lockpick for MW3's launch next month.
Whether this early Oni appearance will be fixed or allowed to stand for a week remains to be seen. Nonetheless, Xbox and PC players who officially gain access to Oni on October 27 will be able to use him in Modern Warfare 3 when it releases on November 10. As Modern Warfare 2 concludes its successful run with The Haunting, many players are eagerly anticipating Modern Warfare 3, which has received acclaim for its improved movement and remade maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009) during its recent open beta.
