Call of Duty 2026 Might Skip PS4 & Xbox One – Is This the End of Last-Gen Support?
A new report from a trusted leaker suggests that Call of Duty 2026 may not be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If true, this could mark the end of Call of Duty releases for last-generation consoles, shifting the franchise's focus entirely to modern gaming platforms.
The Call of Duty series has spanned multiple console generations over the years. While the franchise began on PC, it quickly expanded to Sony and Microsoft platforms, covering four generations of PlayStation and three generations of Xbox. Some entries in the series have served as the final releases for certain console generations, mainly due to hardware limitations preventing older systems from handling the increasingly demanding features of newer games. For instance, Black Ops 3 was the last Call of Duty game to launch on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Given that the PS4 and Xbox One were released in 2013, their hardware is now over a decade old, making it likely that their support for Call of Duty will soon come to an end.
According to a recent leak from reputable insider TheGhostOfHope, shared via Twitter, Call of Duty 2026 is unlikely to launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is reportedly set within the Modern Warfare universe and is being developed by Infinity Ward. If this information is accurate, CoD 2026 could be the first entry in the franchise to forgo support for last-generation consoles entirely.
Call of Duty May End Last-Gen Support Starting in 2026
Further reports from insider CharlieIntel on Twitter suggest that Call of Duty 2025 could be the final installment to support last-generation consoles.
Expected to be developed by Treyarch and set within the Black Ops saga as a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops 2, the 2025 game may mirror how Black Ops 3 handled its cross-generation release in 2015. If true, PS4 and Xbox One players would have one last opportunity to experience a new Call of Duty title on their consoles. However, it remains uncertain whether the last-gen versions will match the quality of newer platforms. In the past, older console versions have suffered from downgraded graphics and restricted content to ensure stability, as seen with BO3’s last-gen release.
While this development may not come as a surprise—since console generations naturally phase out over time—it could still be frustrating for players who must upgrade to newer hardware to continue playing the franchise. However, as these reports are still based on leaks and speculation, the exact plans for Call of Duty 2026 remain unclear. Given the long development cycle of major games, changes are always possible before release. For now, players will have to wait and see how the situation unfolds.
