Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Characters Who Might Appear

There are just over two months left until Avengers: Doomsday, perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year. The Russo brothers’ film is set to be the most ambitious crossover in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the title suggests, it introduces Doctor Doom, one of the greatest villains in the comics, played on the big screen by Robert Downey Jr., best known as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

The film will feature characters from three universes - the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. The central concept is “incursions,” when one universe absorbs another. For this and other reasons, the cast likely includes quite a few undisclosed names, some of them big surprises. Various insiders and alleged script leaks have hinted at this. Below, you’ll find out which characters might appear. This article may contain spoilers.

Spider-Man (Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire)

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 1

The biggest question mark in the cast is Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. Many expected him to have a lead role, especially since Doctor Doom apparently looks just like Tony Stark, who is practically a father figure to Peter Parker, but that didn’t happen. We also shouldn’t forget the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which confirms the hero is off-world, though where exactly is unknown. It may be a tease that he’ll somehow join the fight against Doctor Doom after ending up in another universe.

He isn’t the only Spider-Man who might appear. According to rumors and insider reports, Tobey Maguire will play Peter Parker again, and from the descriptions of his scenes, it’s something fans have long wanted to see on the big screen.

Deadpool and Wolverine

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 2

According to a leaked overview, the opening scene will show Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man fighting the iconic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively. Since the film is built on incursions, the X-Men universe is expected to collide with the Spider-Man universe, which leads to a fight between the heroes. Few would expect a movie called Avengers to start like this, but it shows the Russo brothers are making something truly unexpected.

Scarlet Witch

As with Tom Holland, there are rumors that Elizabeth Olsen will return as Scarlet Witch, even though the character “died” at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. According to insiders, Marvel added her during recent reshoots, but her role is unclear. The most likely theory is that she has joined Doctor Doom’s team.

Hulk

Marvel hasn’t confirmed that Mark Ruffalo will return as the Hulk, but a post-credits scene in Avengers: Endgame Encore hints at it. In the scene, Bruce Banner, after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, speaks on camera about turning into the Hulk for the first time in many years. Near the end of his speech, Doctor Doom arrives and appears to kidnap him.

Doctor Strange and Clea

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 5

After the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange and a sorceress named Clea traveled to the Dark Dimension to resolve the clash of universes. Since then, neither character has appeared on the big screen, and rumors claim we’ll see the duo again in Doomsday. Reports indicate they will also be on Doom’s side, with Doctor Strange as his assistant named Boris and Clea as one of the witches, which recently released promotional materials confirmed.

Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 6

Kathryn Newton is confirmed to return as Cassie Lang. Since she will likely join the Young Avengers/Champions in the future, Marvel will probably need to hint at that in the crossover. This would explain a possible appearance or cameo by Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), the latter of whom is connected to several other characters described below.

Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Binary

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 7

One of the films that set up Avengers: Doomsday is The Marvels, specifically its post-credits scene. In it, Beast (Kelsey Grammer) appears, and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who ends up in another universe, meets her mother, but it turns out to be an alternate version of her: Binary (Lashana Lynch). Given how these characters are connected, along with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), seeing all three heroines in Doomsday is entirely plausible and would make sense for the plot and for explaining what happened.

Sylvie

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 8

Another post-credits scene from Avengers: Endgame Encore takes us to the TVA, where we see familiar faces from the Loki series, Mobius and Ouroboros. That doesn’t mean they’ll appear in Avengers: Doomsday, since the Russo brothers have confirmed the scenes from Encore won’t be in Doomsday. But there’s one character many fans hope to see: Sylvie, the female variant of Loki. We’ll most likely see a scene set in the TVA, and there are even rumors she might be one of Doctor Doom’s witches.

Storm and Jean Grey

Avengers: Doomsday—Unconfirmed Character Who Might Appear 9

As mentioned, Avengers: Doomsday will bring back many X-Men characters previously owned by Fox, including Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Magneto, and others. Storm (Halle Berry) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), however, are missing from the list of iconic characters. Fans think they may have died in other incursions, but they could at least be mentioned or appear in flashbacks.

Even if most of these characters don’t appear the way fans want, the film promises to be packed with action and excitement, as the trailers have already shown. Avengers: Doomsday premieres on December 18.
