Avengers: Endgame Has Once Again Become the Highest-Grossing Movie, Beating Avatar
The rivalry between Avengers: Endgame and Avatar for the highest-grossing film of all time has flared up once again. The reason's simple: the MCU's biggest crossover (so far) has gotten a limited theatrical re-release and reclaimed the top spot.
Avengers: Endgame Encore, which hit theaters late last month, has pushed the film past Avatar to reclaim the number one position on the all-time box office list. According to Box Office Mojo, Avengers: Endgame now sits at $2,925,466,085, just ahead of Avatar's $2,923,710,708. Avatar originally held the top spot from 2009 until 2019, when Endgame overtook it after crossing $2.79 billion. James Cameron's film clawed its way back in 2021 thanks to a Chinese re-release, but now Marvel's film is back on top, at least for now.
Avengers: Endgame is once again the highest-grossing movie in box office history, reclaiming the title from Avatar:
- The two blockbusters have passed the crown back and forth over the years as they’ve returned to theaters for various re-releases.
- Avengers: Endgame has now grossed $2.925B worldwide, just above 2009’s Avatar ($2.923B) after five re-releases.
Interestingly, it's not the only Marvel film making waves at the box office right now: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sony's MCU entry, landed in third place on the all-time list, pulling in more than $2.5 billion worldwide.
As for Endgame's extended cut, Encore, it included several new scenes setting up Avengers: Doomsday, the next big MCU crossover premiering this December. Given the hype already building, it wouldn't be shocking if Doomsday eventually surpasses Endgame's record itself, it certainly has a real shot.
