Rainbow Six Siege Faces Ongoing Issues After Hack-Forced Temporary Shutdown

Rainbow Six Siege continues to experience widespread service problems days after Ubisoft was forced to intentionally shut the game down following a large-scale third-party hack. The incident, which unfolded in late December, disrupted player accounts across all platforms and led to emergency measures that have yet to fully stabilize the live environment.

According to player reports, hackers gained deep access to live systems. Thousands of accounts were banned and unbanned at will, the in-game ban feed was taken over, and every active player account received roughly two billion credits and renown. All premium skins were also unlocked globally without payment. The breach went further, with dozens of fake accounts being banned in sequence so their usernames spelled out lyrics from Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean in the public ban ticker.

Ubisoft acknowledged an “incident” on December 27 and confirmed it had intentionally shut down Rainbow Six Siege and its Marketplace while teams investigated. The company did not disclose technical details of the intrusion but confirmed that erroneous transactions were being rolled back. Ubisoft also stated that no players would be punished for spending credits obtained during the breach and clarified that the ban ticker itself had been disabled in a previous update.

“An official R6 ShieldGuard ban wave did occur, but is not related to this incident,” Ubisoft said. “We are working very hard to make sure this is resolved and players can play again.”

In a later update posted to X, the publisher outlined its recovery plan.

“A rollback is currently ongoing and afterwards, extensive quality control tests will be executed to ensure the integrity of accounts and effectiveness of changes,” Ubisoft said.

“The team is focused on getting players back into the game as quickly as possible.”

Ubisoft cautioned that timelines could not be guaranteed due to the care required in correcting account data

“Please know that this matter is being handled with extreme care and therefore, timing cannot be guaranteed. We will provide another update as soon as we know more.”

On December 28, Ubisoft initiated what it described as a soft launch. Access was limited to a small subset of players while live testing continued. Full access was restored on December 29, though the reopening brought new problems. Players reported extended login queues, and Ubisoft warned that those who logged in during the affected period might temporarily lose access to some owned items as investigations continue. Corrections are expected to take place over the next two weeks.

The in-game Marketplace remains closed with no reopening date announced. Ubisoft said it would stay offline until further notice while the company investigates the cause of the breach and associated data inconsistencies.

“We appreciate your patience as we work hard to investigate the cause of these known issues and ensure the whole community can get back to playing Siege,” Ubisoft said in its most recent statement.

Despite the return of general access, Rainbow Six Siege’s service status page continues to show unplanned issues across every platform. At the time of writing, connectivity, authentication, matchmaking, and the in-game store are all listed as degraded or fully offline on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and last-generation consoles. Ubisoft has not explained why these systems remain unstable several days after reopening.

The incident has raised concerns among players about backend security and account integrity, particularly given the scale of unauthorized changes and the length of the ongoing recovery. For now, Rainbow Six Siege remains playable for many users, but core services continue to fluctuate as Ubisoft works to contain the fallout from one of the most disruptive breaches in the game’s history.
