Overwatch Season 4 Launches Today With a Battle Pass Overhaul and New Tank D.Mon

Overwatch's Season 4, subtitled Heroes of Busan, went live on August 11 with the battle pass's first structural rework in years: players now pick which Legendary skin track to chase first instead of working through it in a fixed order. A new tank hero and a three-week event built around five playable MEKA pilots launched alongside it.

The battle pass splits into five main tracks after a short intro, each holding a Legendary or Epic skin, and players choose the order to level them rather than unlocking rewards in a set sequence. Premium owners get one Tier Hack per season, a single swap that trades an eligible Legendary for something else from a curated pool pulled from past shop and loot box releases, this season offering Raijin Ashe, Mob Boss Junker Queen, and Cardboard Reinhardt among the options. A mid-season addition called the Unvaulted Pass brings back select past battle passes as permanent progression tracks, though those unvaulted passes skip the original premium currency, Mythic Prisms, and prestige titles that came with them the first time.

D.Mon headlines the new content as the season's tank hero, played by Yuna Lee, a former pro gamer and MEKA Squad pilot flying a mech called Beast, armed with a Plasma Saber, Power Barrier, Propulsors, and a Fusion Repeater, with Limit Break as her ultimate push ability. She anchors MEKA Mania, an event running through August 31 that puts five MEKA pilots, including D.Va and D.Mon, into a rotating game show format where players pick a pilot pass, clear challenges, and vote on favorites, with all five passes completed unlocking a surprise Prestige track.

The timing lines up with how Overwatch has been pacing content lately. Season 3's Venture Excavation Initiative closed out on the same day Season 4 opened, rewarding daily logins with loot boxes instead of asking for a grind spike at the finish. D.Mon also continues a one-new-hero-per-season habit that started with Shion's debut as a motorcycle-riding DPS pick when Season 3 launched back in June.

I think letting players pick their skin order matters more than it sounds, since it fixes the actual complaint about battle passes, that a player might grind through weeks of content for a skin they don't want before reaching one they do. I'd guess the Tier Hack swap does more to keep whales spending than to help anyone chasing a single free-to-play track, since one swap per season barely dents a pass that used to lock everyone into the same order regardless of preference.

Team Drives, a competitive event with persistent teammate grouping, follows in early September, alongside a World Cup Cheer Rally running through mid-September.
