xQc Alleges Overwatch League Inflated Viewership, Influencing His Exit from Pro Play
Popular streamer and former pro player Felix “xQc” Lengyel has claimed that the Overwatch League artificially boosted its viewership numbers using bots—an issue he says contributed to his decision to leave competitive play.
The comments came in response to a 2019 video featuring businessman Mark Cuban, who cited peak league viewership of around 300,000. xQc challenged those figures, arguing that the actual audience was far smaller, estimating it at closer to 14,000 viewers.
He described the reported numbers as “so inflated it’s almost comical,” and suggested that the true viewership had been obscured for years.
According to xQc, this belief was shaped early on by information from an unnamed source during the league’s initial phase on the Major League Gaming platform. The source allegedly provided internal data that significantly contradicted the official statistics.
However, no evidence has been presented to support these claims, and the source remains undisclosed.
xQc also explained that these concerns affected his outlook on a long-term career in the league. Despite already signing a contract at the time, doubts about the league’s actual reach led him to reconsider his future and eventually pivot toward streaming.
“I had already signed, but hearing that made me think about how to exit,” he said, noting that it didn’t seem worthwhile to build a career in a league with what he believed to be a limited real audience.
The statements have once again sparked debate around viewership transparency in esports, though there is currently no official confirmation backing these allegations.
