Overwatch Players Can Earn Bonus XP and Free Loot Boxes This Weekend

Overwatch has officially launched another Junkrat’s Loot Hunt event, giving players the opportunity to earn free Loot Boxes and double Battle Pass XP for a limited time. The event is live now and runs until May 12, offering extra rewards ahead of the upcoming mid-season update for Reign of Talon Season 2.

Double Battle Pass XP Returns

This version of Junkrat’s Loot Hunt comes with a major bonus compared to previous runs of the event. Alongside free Loot Boxes, players can now earn double Battle Pass XP simply by playing matches during the event period.

Normally, Overwatch awards around 700 to 1,000 Battle Pass XP per completed match, with additional bonuses for wins, longer games, grouping with teammates, and queueing for high-demand roles. With the double XP event active, players maximizing all available bonuses can earn well over 2,000 XP per win.

The timing is especially important for players trying to finish the current Battle Pass before the mid-season patch arrives.

How Junkrat’s Loot Hunt Works

Players can unlock up to nine free Loot Boxes by completing matches throughout the event. The progression system follows the same gated structure used in recent limited-time events.

Each Loot Box requires progress from five matches:

• Wins count as double progress
• Stadium matches also provide double progress
• Progress only advances toward one Loot Box at a time

For example, if a player is sitting at four out of five games required and wins their next match, any extra progress from the victory will not carry over to the following challenge tier.

Mid-Season Update Arrives Soon

The event also serves as a lead-in to the upcoming Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 2 mid-season update, which is expected to launch shortly after Junkrat’s Loot Hunt ends on May 12.

Several additions have already been confirmed for the update, including:

• Jetpack Cat joining Stadium mode
• The new Ra Ana Mythic skin arriving in the shop
• Additional balance changes and hero tuning
• Further adjustments for Sierra, the DPS hero introduced this season

Season 2 originally launched on April 15 and runs through June 16, meaning Blizzard is preparing to enter the second half of the current competitive cycle.

More Overwatch Content Is on the Way

With Season 3 only about a month away, players are already beginning to speculate about the next hero coming to Overwatch. Current leaks suggest Blizzard may introduce another Damage hero with gameplay similarities to Cassidy, though no official confirmation has been provided yet.

For now, the combination of free Loot Boxes and double XP makes this one of the best weekends in recent months for Overwatch players looking to level up quickly and unlock additional cosmetics before the next major update drops.
