Overwatch Mobile Set to Launch in Japan and Korea Under NEXON's Publishing

Blizzard Entertainment’s iconic team-based first-person shooter, Overwatch, is making its way to mobile — and it will be published by NEXON in Japan and South Korea. After a fierce battle between major Korean gaming giants, NEXON has officially secured the publishing rights for Overwatch Mobile in these two key regions.

NEXON Wins the Bidding War for Overwatch Mobile

Earlier, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch Mobile is currently in development, with the project being led by Walter Kong, the General Manager of Overwatch. For those unfamiliar, Overwatch is a futuristic team-based FPS known for its ever-evolving lineup of heroes and global esports tournaments. Following the massive success of the original game, Overwatch 2 launched in 2022 with enhanced graphics, new modes, and expanded features.

According to MTN News, top Korean companies — including NCSOFT, Netmarble, and KRAFTON — competed alongside NEXON in late 2024 for both the Starcraft IP development rights and the distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile. Ultimately, NEXON emerged victorious and is now in advanced negotiations with Blizzard.

Overwatch Mobile: A MOBA Experience?

Interestingly, it's been revealed that Overwatch Mobile will adopt a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) structure. While the PC and console versions of Overwatch already blend shooter and MOBA elements, this shift hints that the mobile version might more directly compete with major mobile MOBAs like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Honor of Kings, and League of Legends: Wild Rift.

Limited Regional Rights

While Korean gaming companies initially sought global distribution rights, Blizzard decided to limit the deal strictly to South Korea and Japan. Development of Overwatch Mobile remains in-house at Blizzard, with Korean insiders reportedly referring to the project as "Overwatch 3" during the bidding process.

At this stage, there’s no official release roadmap, but anticipation is high. Personally, I’m eager to see how Blizzard adapts the beloved Overwatch formula to mobile platforms. Right now, T3 Arena offers a somewhat similar experience, but it doesn't quite deliver the authentic Overwatch feel that longtime fans crave.
