Overwatch Classic Returns in Overwatch 2 with DPS Doomfist and More
Overwatch Classic is making a comeback in Overwatch 2, this time with additional heroes from the original game's early post-launch roster, including the highly anticipated return of DPS Doomfist. The first wave of Overwatch Classic ran from November to early December, offering players a nostalgic glimpse of the game’s early days. This limited-time mode reintroduced the original 6v6 gameplay format with a restricted selection of the first 21 heroes, each restored to their initial ability kits.
Doomfist originally joined Overwatch in the summer of 2017 as a DPS hero, bringing a playstyle defined by his unparalleled mobility and unique abilities. However, when Overwatch 2 launched in 2022, Blizzard controversially reclassified Doomfist as a tank. This change followed Symmetra’s 2018 transition from Support to DPS, marking Doomfist as only the second hero to undergo a role switch. In his tank role, Doomfist received a bulkier frame and lost his iconic Rising Uppercut, which was replaced with Power Block—an ability designed to charge up his signature Rocket Punch.
Now, Overwatch fans can look forward to another round of Overwatch Classic, which launches on February 4. This time, Blizzard is expanding the roster to include early post-launch heroes such as Ana, Sombra, Orisa, and Doomfist—who will return to his original DPS role for the first time since Overwatch 1 ended. The mode will also bring back the infamous "Mercy Moth" meta, allowing players to relive one of the game’s most iconic periods.
DPS Doomfist Returns in Overwatch Classic
Since Overwatch Classic restores all heroes to their original ability kits, Doomfist fans will once again be able to use his Rising Uppercut, an ability that was removed when he transitioned into a tank. Additionally, this wave of Overwatch Classic will see the return of Orisa’s notorious bunker shield, a defensive tool that frustrated many opponents—especially when paired with Bastion or a Torbjörn turret.
Based on the previous duration of the mode, this second wave of Overwatch Classic is expected to last for about two to three weeks. It is also likely that Blizzard is already preparing a third installment, which may introduce additional post-launch heroes such as Moira, Brigitte, Wrecking Ball, and Ashe.
Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 is currently in the latter half of its 14th season, which introduced the latest tank hero, Hazard. Season 15 is set to launch in mid-to-late February, though it will not feature a new hero. Instead, players can anticipate a new battle pass theme along with new maps and modes. Whether the third wave of Overwatch Classic will be part of Season 15 remains to be seen, but fans will undoubtedly be eager for more opportunities to revisit the original Overwatch experience.
