The shortage of next-generation consoles will last until December 2021
As noted, the shortage of the new generation of consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on store shelves may last until the end of this year.
The lack of components is caused by several factors:
- The coronavirus pandemic has seriously increased the demand for technology, including on the console. For example, representatives of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer TSMC noted that some users literally store devices at home.
- The massive spread of 5G forced manufacturers to redistribute production capacity specifically for the production of chips for such devices, while processors and video cards for PCs and consoles are produced on a leftover basis.
Bloomberg notes that the period of crossgene, when consoles of the previous generation are still relevant, may last until early next year. According to sources close to Sony and Microsoft, the companies are not sure if they will be able to meet the demand for next-generation consoles even during the 2021 New Year holidays.
Note that until recently, the head of AMD Lisa Su expressed concern that the components for the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 will not be enough for several months. It is possible that the problem will be resolved only by the fall.
