God of War: Ragnarok Is PlayStation’s Most Selling Game of This Generation

God of War: Ragnarok, released in 2022, is considered one of the best games of this generation. As it turns out, it's also been a massive success for PlayStation, having generated incredible profits for the company over the years.

Rhys Elliott, representing Alinea Analytics, shared more detailed figures on this matter. A recent report states God of War: Ragnarok has sold 21.6 million copies. Of these, 20.1 million were sold on PlayStation and only 1.6 million on Steam. Total revenue amounts to $1.4 billion, and 1.1 million copies were sold this year, generating nearly $60 million. These figures are so impressive that, for 2026, they surpassed the performance of some games released this year, notably Gears of War: E-Day and Saros.

This puts Ragnarok only second to GOW (2018) which reportedly sold ~23M copies.

Formerly, it was reported that Ragnarok cost $200M to make, making it a massive financial success for Sony and Santa Monica.

The Alinea Analytics also provides additional statistics. Specifically, it notes that ten PlayStation titles have generated more than $6.5 billion. Nearly 85% of this amount comes from PlayStation platforms. Following God of War: Ragnarok, which ranks first, are Marvel's Spider-Man 2 ($1.3 billion), Gran Turismo 7 ($841.9 million), and Helldivers II ($786.3 million).

Together, the 10 games generated over $6.5 billion across PlayStation (84.7%), Steam (14.1%), and Xbox (1.2% via just Helldivers 2).

Next year, Santa Monica Studio will release God of War: Laufey, the new installment in the franchise. The game was originally scheduled for release in February, but this week the developers announced that it had been pushed back to May of the same year. Despite this, God of War Laufey was among the top pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 for a while last month, and the situation will likely be the same as the release date approaches.
