Sony Revealed Marvel's Wolverine Financial Success - 2.4 Million Copies Have Been Sold

Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games, released this September, had fairly high expectations but turned out to be quite controversial. The combat was great, and the story was solid, but critics and players felt it lacked ambition and variety, which led to mixed reviews. For a long time, official sales figures were unknown, but Sony has now revealed them.

In its latest financial report, Sony claimed Marvel’s Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies in its first two months. That isn’t a small number, but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold 2.5 million copies on its first day. By that comparison, sales of Insomniac’s new superhero game are underwhelming, to put it mildly, especially since development reportedly cost $300 million.

Marvel’s Wolverine has reportedly sold only 2.4 million units so far.

For context: Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 sold 9 million copies within the first 90 days. Marvel’sWolverine reportedly cost more than three times the budget of Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Very major loss for Sony.

Social media users also pointed to sales of other Insomniac titles. The original Marvel’s Spider-Man sold 3.3 million copies in 3 days, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold 6.5 million in total. According to a 2023 leak, Marvel’s Wolverine needs to sell 6 million copies in a year to meet Sony’s targets, or Insomniac’s plans could be at risk.

Shortly after release, Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott revealed we shouldn’t expect Marvel’s Wolverine to match the Spider-Man games’ sales, and the current results suggest he was right. The situation may improve once the game goes on sale, and hopefully it won’t affect Insomniac’s plans for the series. Last month, news broke that the studio may be working on an X-Men project. Job postings suggest it will be a game with multiple playable characters, a third-person perspective, boss battles, and more.
