Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Will Resemble Dragon Age In One Way

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, announced last year at The Game Awards, is one of the most anticipated RPGs that will release in the next couple of years. The reason is that development is led by Casey Hudson, a former BioWare writer who was game director on the original Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. So, the excitement around this project is easy to understand.

Fate of the Old Republic is believed to be in early development, and much about the game is still unknown. Meanwhile, Hudson’s former colleague Mark Darrah, who was a producer at BioWare for many years and led the Dragon Age games, recently spoke with Eldorado.gg. He talked about BioWare’s recent closure, the failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the launch of Anthem, and even GTA 6. The conversation naturally turned to Fate of the Old Republic, and according to Darrah, its storytelling will resemble the Dragon Age series. You can check out more of his comments below:

“One thing I can be confident of is that it’s gonna be really good at cinematic storytelling, because that’s something that Casey cares very deeply about. It’s something that I am very confident that they will be spending a lot of effort on. So it will be a storytelling game, and it will do its storytelling effectively. In terms of what the structure of the game is around the storytelling, that’s actually where I have almost no confidence. I have no idea. But it’s like, will it tell a good story? Yeah, I’m really confident that it’ll do that.

Casey and I have talked, and I think that he definitely is going to be looking at simplifying some of the way that storytelling is done. I think to some degree, you could argue that maybe BioWare has gotten a little self-indulgent in its storytelling. And I think that Casey maybe sees that a little bit as well. So there might be a stripping it back a little bit more towards a more simple hero’s journey. I don’t know. Maybe I’m putting words in his mouth.”

This spring, Hudson shared some details about the game. He hinted that it won’t be a 200-hour game and confirmed that no generative AI is being used in its development. Before that, other BioWare veterans who worked on the studio’s best games were also reported to be working on it.

Additionally, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently confirmed that Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare and canceled Mass Effect 5 in favor of Star Wars Battlefront 3, which DICE and Respawn Entertainment will develop. He also added that the third installment of Star Wars Jedi will be officially announced soon.
