Liquid Swords Is Officially Shutting Down, 6 Months After the Release of Its Debut Game, Samson

A couple of days ago, reports surfaced that Liquid Swords, a new studio founded by former Just Cause developers, had gone bankrupt, even though its debut game, Samson, only came out this past April. An official announcement from the studio’s head followed quickly.

On his X page, Christofer Sundberg, head of Liquid Swords and creator of Just Cause, announced that the studio is officially shutting down. He thanked the team that helped him make Samson and promised to share more about the game’s future later. You can check out his latest statement below:

Liquid Swords is closing. Samson did far better on consoles, but it wasn’t enough to save the studio. I’m proud of our team and what we built.

We’re discussing continued support for Samson. We make mistakes, we learn, we rise, we move on.

I never give up. More soon.

As revealed in Sundberg’s post, the console release of Samson didn’t help the studio or prevent its shutdown. The game launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S last month, nearly half a year after the PC release. Official sales figures for Samson haven’t been disclosed. According to Sensor Tower, the game sold more than 60,000 copies on Steam, with potential revenue of around $1.2 million.

Samson is a crime action game about Samson McCray, who owes the mafia $100,000. When the mob kidnaps his sister, players race against a time limit, completing missions as quickly as possible to pay off the debt and get her back. The game got mixed reviews from critics and currently has a score of 51 on Metacritic, and it’s now available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
