Resident Evil 2 Sold 20 Million Copies, and Capcom’s Revenue on Steam Revealed

It’s no secret the Resident Evil franchise is Capcom’s main financial driver, and the February release of the ninth installment, Requiem, only confirms this. A recent announcement from the studio, though, focuses on the financial performance of one of the best remakes in history.

Capcom has released their latest financial report, which confirms Resident Evil 2 Remake, released in 2019, has surpassed 20 million copies sold across all platforms. The game has become the franchise’s all-time best-seller, surpassing Resident Evil 5 (19 million copies) and Resident Evil 7 Biohazard (18.4 million copies), which is truly a massive success for Capcom.

Capcom revealed the milestone in a press release about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 versions, saying that bringing games like Resident Evil 2 to new platforms will help expand its user base.

Additionally, Alinea Analytics shared the latest data on Capcom’s profits on Steam. According to a report by analyst Rhys Elliott, the studio’s revenue totaled $617 million, of which $309 million was net profit. It is also reported Resident Evil Requiem generated over $200 million on Steam alone, where more than 3.6 million copies were sold. Naturally, the franchise generated the most revenue, but the report also highlights Monster Hunter, Street Fighter 6, and the studio’s new IP, Pragmata. Speaking of the latter, the game sold 1.2 million copies on Steam, generating over $60 million.

Capcom's revenue from Resident Evil will increase next month, as the remake trilogy will become available on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16. As for future releases, Resident Evil Veronica—a remake of the 2000 game—is set to launch in 2027. The game was rumored to release in the first half of the year, but according to a recent report by Dusk Golem, it has been pushed back to the autumn of that same year. Additionally, Capcom is actively working on story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, though its release date and details remain unknown.
