Build A Rocket Boy, Developers of MindsEye, Might Be Officially Shut Down Soon
In 2025, Build A Rocket Boy, a studio led by former Rockstar North producer Leslie Benzies, released its debut project, MindsEye. Despite the ambition behind it, the game turned out to be the year's biggest flop and disappointment, drawing a wave of negative reviews. Since then, the studio has been through several rounds of layoffs, and it now looks like it might be headed toward full shutdown.
ResetEra users have noticed LinkedIn posts from several Build A Rocket Boy employees suggesting they were affected by the latest round of cuts. Former Principal Talent Acquisition Partner & HR Operations Dan Hawkins and Release Manager Michaela Emslie both shared updates confirming this. Hawkins also noted he'll be staying on until the studio's end, which reads as a pretty clear signal that closure may just be a matter of time. Build A Rocket Boy's leadership hasn't issued any official statement yet, though sources speaking to Kotaku have also indicated the studio is close to shutting down.

This May marked the studio's latest round of layoffs, affecting roughly 170 employees, including level designers, QA specialists, and audio designers, coming shortly after MindsEye's new DLC was released. The game itself is currently 50% off on both Steam and the PlayStation Store.
