Marvel’s Wolverine Received Mixed Reactions from Players
A couple of hours ago, a new PlayStation 5 exclusive was released: Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games. As with the critics' reviews, regular gamers have mixed feelings about the game—a game that has both positive aspects and elements that aren't quite up to par.
Based on the active discussion about the game on Reddit, it appears that Marvel's Wolverine players generally enjoyed the combat system, the spectacular staging, the animation, and the main character himself. Additionally, lots of gamers have praised the visuals and the gripping storyline. That said, the game does have quite a few flaws.
Even from a combat perspective, players feel Marvel's Wolverine lacks any well-developed and varied mechanics, which makes the battles feel repetitive. Many also complain about the linear narrative structure and especially the constant prompts telling you what to do and where to go—there’s no room to explore here. One of the most disappointing moments for players was the motorcycle scene, which looked spectacular in the trailers but turns out to be just a typical scripted sequence; and even if Logan crashes into a tree while riding, he’ll keep going without losing any speed or control.
Many had high hopes for Marvel's Wolverine, but it turned out that Insomniac's new project was just a run-of-the-mill, passable action game. There’s also a chance Sony will be left without a “Game of the Year” nomination at The Game Awards for the first time in 11 years—although Saros, released by Housemarque this spring, is still a viable candidate since it has higher ratings.
Despite mixed reviews, Insomniac Games posted an emotional message to fans on the occasion of the launch of Marvel's Wolverine, and Liam McIntyre, who provided the voice and likeness of the title character, stated he is extremely proud of his role.
Marvel's Wolverine currently has a critics' score of 77 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, with 69% of critics recommending the game. The title also ranks second on the list of PlayStation Studios' lowest-rated games, trailing only Concord.
The game is now available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
