S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope Receives Praised Media Reviews Amid Its Imminent Launch

In a few hours, Cost of Hope—the new DLC for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl—will be released on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The gaming press has already had a chance to check out the expansion, and it appears that GSC Game World has managed to create a very solid product that significantly expands the universe's lore.

According to critics, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope offers a thrilling storyline that significantly expands upon the story of the original game (Heart of Chernobyl), and the new locations—full of unknowns and various secrets—are particularly noteworthy. Along with Cost of Hope, the developers will also release Update 2.0 —an update that improves many aspects of the game, including combat, stealth, and graphics. Additionally, it fixes a number of technical bugs, and now S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl seems to feel exactly as the studio originally intended. Currently, Cost of Hope has a Metacritic score of 85 (Based on 13 Critic Reviews) and an 87 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, with 88% of critics recommending it. DayOne – 95/100:

If you haven’t played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, ‘Cost of Hope’ marks the perfect time to jump in. Though be warned, this is a story expansion that requires you to have nearly completed the main campaign. It is seamlessly blended into the progression of the story, and it is fantastic. Genuinely scary moments abound, with the title’s trademark gunplay feeling better than ever. Consider playing in the native VO, and lose yourself in the zone.

Insider Gaming – 90/100:

STALKER 2's Cost of Hope expansion represents the next generation of a beloved franchise, but this time, it sets the stage for the most major evolution we've ever seen. It's a haunting, emotional, and twisting expansion that might not be perfect, but comes damn close.

Gamereactor UK – 80/100:

I can say straight away the expansion is good; it explores classic factions, offers new areas, and new characters. It also features new dangers, weapons, and new equipment. Although there are significantly fewer missions than in the base game, they are of a relatively much higher quality in terms of mission design and level design, and they'll particularly appeal to those of you who really enjoyed the first game and its expansions. I still think it's worth it for new players as the story is gripping, the weapons are quite useful for the rest of the adventure, the mutants offer more variety, and the binoculars are brilliant for the flatter, open environments you explore in the base game. The expansion could have included a few more new missions, radio tracks, and additional mutants, but overall it expands the world in a good way and all the fresh content fits seamlessly with the main campaign. If you're playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, I think you should snap this up.

While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was already a great open-world game, Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope have pushed it even further, regardless of whether you’re a franchise die-hard or a new player.

The expansion Cost of Hope offers the perfect opportunity to dive into the world of Stalker 2. For just under 30 euros – or for owners of the Ultimate Edition – you get a very intense and extensive campaign that tells a gripping story. At the same time, the new patch delivers numerous visual and technical improvements, ensuring that this atmospheric shooter is more playable than ever before. However, you should still expect a few rough edges when it comes to presentation and performance. Furthermore, ‘Cost of Hope’ repeatedly gets in its own way with clumsy gameplay elements.

Last week, GSC Game World provided detailed information about Update 2.0; it was revealed that the update is aimed at significantly improving graphics, enhancing the AI system known as A-Life, adding new weapons and binoculars, and much more.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, alongside Update 2.0, will release on August 20 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
