Kingdom Hearts 4 Sends Sora to Coco's Land of the Dead
Disney closed Friday's D23 Entertainment Showcase with the first substantial look at Kingdom Hearts 4 since the game was announced in 2022. The trailer set a 2027 release window, announced a Kingdom Hearts anime series, and confirmed the first new Disney world in the game: the Land of the Dead from Pixar's Coco.
The footage opens there. Miguel's grandfather Héctor lays out the rule that drives Coco, that the dead who are forgotten by the living eventually meet a Final Death. Sora turns up in skull face paint cut to match the world's Día de los Muertos design, teams with Miguel and Héctor, and clears a wave of Heartless. He walks out of the fight with a Coco-themed Keyblade.
I read the Coco pick as the strongest option on Disney's board, because a world where being forgotten kills you hands a series built on lost memories somewhere obvious to go.
The choice says something about the world roster too. Pixar only entered the series with Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2019, so opening the new game with a 2017 Pixar film points at recent Disney output rather than the animated back catalogue the first two games worked through. The anime series announced at the same showcase points the same way, with Disney treating Kingdom Hearts as a property to expand outside games.
Donald and Goofy sit out that stretch. The trailer cuts to the pair hunting for Sora in the Underworld and around Quadratum, the realistic, Tokyo-inspired city at the center of Kingdom Hearts 4. Quadratum has absorbed most of the theorizing since 2022, because its architecture and lighting look nothing like the fantasy worlds the series usually builds. Putting Donald and Goofy in it, instead of keeping them beside Sora, also gives the trailer two separate lines of action.
I care more about how much of Quadratum can actually be walked than about the Disney world count, since that city is the only part of the game that looks built for wandering rather than for a fixed set piece.
Friday's trailer is the biggest gameplay reveal Kingdom Hearts 4 has had since April 2022. What filled the gap was a handful of teasers and occasional reassurance from Tetsuya Nomura that work on Kingdom Hearts 4 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake was moving. March's anniversary illustration teased near 2027 without naming a month: Xehanort under an umbrella among purple flowers, a Japanese caption thanking the community and mentioning the run-up to the 25th anniversary, and a reply section full of jokes about crumbs. In February, leaker Extas1s described a remake of the 2002 original called Kingdom Hearts Relux for early 2027, NateTheHate pointed to insiders calling it fake within days, and the debunked remake has not resurfaced.

June brought the first real gameplay footage and a simultaneous PC and console launch, which breaks a habit of Kingdom Hearts games reaching PC months or years behind consoles. Friday's showcase added the year and the first world.
Nomura has said the fourth main entry pushes the story toward a definitive conclusion, and that he intends to step away from directing once it is finished. A 2027 window sets that ending in the same year the series turns 25, the milestone Square Enix has been steering toward since March rather than any trade show slot.
The showcase also lands two weeks after Square Enix closed off a messier Kingdom Hearts story. The Kingdom Hearts Collection, revealed on Nintendo Direct this summer, went up with key art that players started picking apart within hours. Donald Duck had four fingers on one hand and five on the other. The clock tower hands bent downward. The links in Mickey's Keyblade keychain ran uneven, the crown-shaped links on Sora's belt melted into one another, the crowns vanished from the soles of Sora's shoes, and several zippers faded into nothing. Players called it generative AI.
Square Enix took about two months to answer, then denied it in a statement to GameSpot.
"These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI"
— Square Enix representative
The rep put the flaws down to human error, said quality matters to the company, and said updated assets had gone out where appropriate. The new image fixes Donald's hand. Sora's belt crowns, his shoe soles and Mickey's keychain look the same as before, the clock hands sit straighter, and a third version of the art exists as the trailer's YouTube thumbnail, where Donald's hand is hidden. Square Enix has not explained how the original was made. The collection, pitched at the Direct on the strength of native Switch 2 versions of all three games, reaches PC, Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on 8 October.
Four years of teasers trained fans to read anniversary art for hints, and a two-month wait for a statement fits the same habit: Square Enix answers on its own schedule. The 2027 window still has no month attached to it.
The franchise keeps turning up in other people's games while its own sequel takes its time. Leakers SamLeakss and HYPEX have tied Kingdom Hearts to a rumored crossover season in Fortnite alongside Persona, Sonic, Mega Man and Crash Bandicoot, none of it confirmed by Epic. A near-identical Persona rumor from March 2024 named a specific weapon and a specific season, then went nowhere after a report said Sega had paused the deal, so the character list is the part worth watching. Studios with smaller budgets went at the same appetite directly: Duskfade on PS5 assembles an action platformer out of parts borrowed from Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank, built for players who stopped waiting for a sequel.
I expect Kingdom Hearts 4 to end up a game I follow closely for work rather than one I disappear into for a hundred hours, because the Disney worlds are still corridors strung between set pieces and the only stretch that looks open belongs to one city.
Square Enix has yet to name a month, a platform list for Kingdom Hearts 4, or a second world. The Coco reveal answers what the game looks like in motion, which is more than the series had a week ago, and leaves the release window resting on an anniversary the company picked out more than a year in advance.
