Matt Groening Has Teased The Simpsons: Hit & Run Remake

Fans have long been talking about a possible The Simpsons: Hit & Run remake, the game many still call "GTA in the world of The Simpsons," originally released by Radical Entertainment in 2003. There's been no official announcement or even a real hint of one, but Matt Groening, creator of the show, just added more fuel to the speculation.

At the D23 Expo currently underway in California, as reported by Empire, a fan asked Groening whether another The Simpsons: Hit & Run game might happen someday. His response suggested the original game could be coming back in some form before he unexpectedly cut himself off, almost as if he'd said more than he meant to. Either way, that's enough to keep the rumor mill going, even without anything official confirmed yet.

“…or not,” says current showrunner Matt Selman. Sounds like there may be some news coming that wasn’t supposed to be announced yet…

This isn't the first time talk of a The Simpsons: Hit & Run remake has surfaced, either. This spring, Matt Selman, showrunner and writer for both the show and the original game, teased the title could be revived down the line. Meanwhile, according to VGC editor-in-chief Jordan Middler, Activision is reportedly planning to revive more of its licensed franchises following the announcement of the new Spyro game, A Realm Beyond, with a Hit & Run remake mentioned as one of the likely candidates. On top of that, Radical Entertainment rebranded as New Radical Games this February, and it's not out of the question they're quietly working on something.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run, released in 2003, remains a one-of-a-kind entry in the franchise. It features an open world in the vein of GTA, multiple playable characters, and iconic locations from the show. The game includes a full story campaign, plenty of Easter eggs and collectibles, and even split-screen multiplayer support.
