Ubisoft Teases More Assassin’s Creed Remakes Following the Success of Black Flag Resynced

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, released July 9 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, became a massive success for Ubisoft—so massive the company itself hadn't seen these numbers coming. Not only has the game become the highest-rated title in franchise history over the past 13 years, but sales hit 3.5 million copies within two weeks, exceeding Ubisoft's internal predictions for the entire year. Black Flag Resynced's success suggests it might actually be more profitable for the studio to remake older games than brand-new entries in various series—a point recently shared by an official Ubisoft spokesperson.

Following the release of Ubisoft's new Q1 financial report, CFO Frédérick Duguet spoke about the prospect of releasing more remakes of the company's older games. According to him, these projects can generate high profits while keeping costs lower—both in production and marketing. He pointed to Black Flag Resynced as the perfect example; Duguet also noted the studio can lean on existing assets alongside new features in remakes, which has a real impact on the budget. “You also benefit from the awareness of the game, so you can come with lower marketing, but you don’t have the same price as a full game. It’s really a different economic profile.”

Duguet has seemingly teased that Ubisoft may release even more Assassin's Creed remakes soon enough, and it's highly likely the next one would be an updated version of the original 2007 game. There have already been rumors about this, and the developers themselves have teased it through Animus data —and, honestly, it makes a lot of sense. As the very first game in the franchise, Assassin's Creed could get a full-scale remake, going beyond just updated graphics (as with Black Flag Resynced) to add a wealth of new content and tie the game into the wider universe. Not to mention the Ezio trilogy—Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations—though that will probably not be happening anytime soon. At the same time, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced's game director Richard Knight recently hinted the game might get a story DLC at some point, expanding Edward Kenway's story further.

Speaking of more remakes, Ubisoft will also release Rayman Legends: Retold this October, a remake of the original 2013 title with updated 3D graphics and a range of new content, including extra music levels, an expanded soundtrack, and more. Meanwhile, insider noarmsandnolegs has confirmed that, much like with Assassin's Creed, future remakes in the franchise will depend on how well Rayman Legends: Retold performs financially —which only reinforces Ubisoft's strategy and Duguet's comments.
