The Blood of Dawnwalker First Reviews Praise the Game and Compare It to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

One of the many releases scheduled for this September is The Blood of Dawnwalker, Rebel Wolves' debut project—a studio formed by former developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and led by one of its game directors, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. With less than two months remaining until the game's launch, gaming media outlets have already had a chance to try out a preview version and are ready to share their impressions.

As is known, one of the main features of The Blood of Dawnwalker will be a time-limited system, meaning players won't be able to complete every quest and will have to choose which ones to pursue as the story progresses. This is what really stands out in the game, creating a unique gaming experience. In addition, journalists have pointed out similarities to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in terms of atmosphere, music, and storytelling. They also praised the main character, Coen, not only for how he manages his vampiric powers but also because his decisions can influence the fates of other characters.

Previews have started coming out for Blood of Dawnwalker, releasing on September 3rd, here's what they've said:

  • Witcher DNA strong in investigations/music
  • Strong RPG systems
  • Time system will vary playthroughs greatly
  • Can fight main boss immediately
  • Combat can be janky but unique
  • Facial animation looks dated
  • World and graphics are beautiful
  • Well done acting and VA work
  • Unique vampire setting and lore
  • Tons to discover

However, despite the positive feedback, the game is not perfect. Hayes Madsen from Kotaku believes the combat system needs improvement and is somewhat reminiscent of the original Witcher game—an aspect that was heavily criticized at the time. Meanwhile, PC Gamer pointed out in its preview that The Blood of Dawnwalker borrows too much from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which could work against it. On the other hand, Push Square feels that the game not only builds on many of CD Projekt RED's ideas but also looks as if it were developed by experienced specialists rather than a new studio—which, in fact, is true. Moreover, the media claims The Blood of Dawnwalker might be a potential contender for Game of the Year 2026.

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, you play as Coen, a young man turned into a Dawnwalker, forever treading the line between the world of day and the realm of night. The game is set in 14th-century Europe; however, the studio is also working on expanding the series. Judging by a trailer, and the comments from Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, if a sequel is made, its events will take place in the modern world.
