GTA 6 Developers Formed a Special Union and Accused Rockstar Games of Multiple Offenses
While the fans around the world are pre-ordering GTA 6 and speculating when Rockstar Games will reveal new game details and a new trailer, some developers are coming together to form a union. Their objective is to reveal more about the working conditions they are forced to endure and to expose the offenses committed by the gaming studio.
Game Developer recently interviewed three members of the Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU), whose names have been hidden to protect them from potential retaliation by senior studio officials. It was reported that they are currently involved in a lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, accusing it of union suppression. The members also revealed that the studio forces them to work overtime, operates an unfair bonus system, and faces issues with unequal pay. You can check out more detailed comments from the RGWU members below:
"When the bonus is particularly good, it can be a windfall, but often the bonus is disappointing and one can end up being paid considerably less than expected for the year. The reasoning given for this is often nebulous, inconsistent between departments, even inconsistent between team members within the same department, and sometimes hinges on completely subjective or retroactive criticisms.
The main problem is that all completely discretionary for the company, and they are under no obligation to show their working. Employees want good pay, and if literally anything they do that year could affect it, they will naturally feel they have to be as pliable as possible to their boss's whims. Imagine a fifth of your salary could be withheld without any justification or based on a single surprise factor.
There are those with hundreds of millions of pounds, there are those receiving excellent pay for their work and are grateful, and there are certainly those that are woefully underpaid for their effort and the incredible profits gained. Especially when you consider that the company gets hundreds of millions in tax breaks for their UK workers”
It's not the first time developers are complaining about the work schedule at Rockstar Games, especially regarding the development of GTA 6. Previously, an Indian developer working at Rockstar’s department in Bengaluru revealed that overtime is a common practice, and it’s not compensated separately. Moreover, the studio's management expects employees to complete certain tasks within 2-3 months, when it normally takes more than twice as long under a standard work schedule.
It looks like despite the huge anticipation for GTA 6 among fans worldwide, the developers are the ones who are suffering the most.
