$80 Price Tag for GTA 6 Could Lead Other Companies to Raise Their Game Prices
Last week, Rockstar Games officially announced the price for GTA 6—$80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate edition, which includes a wealth of bonuses for players. As expected, this sparked quite a debate within the gaming community about whether the price is justified or excessive. Moreover, this move by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, could prompt other studios to raise prices on their upcoming releases as well.
Recently, David Cole, a representative from DFC Intelligence, spoke with GamesRadar+ and stated that very few gaming giants can afford to set a game price at $80. In his view, games like Grand Theft Auto and Super Mario can command this price because they are in high demand and already have an established fan base. He also added that "some games simply provide much more value than others and should be priced accordingly."
Analyst Joost van Dreunen expressed a similar view, stating that an $80 price tag is "reserved for only a select few titles and franchises." He added that some game publishers who take the risk of raising their game prices might potentially regret it if their projects fail to meet expectations. The highlights from his interview you can check out below:
"Gaming is increasingly becoming a luxury category. Its economics have historically centered around a winner-takes-most model, and GTA 6 raises the bar again. Publishers who can clear it will pull further ahead, and those who cannot will have to compete on distribution instead, finding new channels, bundles, and pricing models to reach players the blockbusters don't.”
Strangely enough, when it comes to its price, GTA 6 is the cheapest game in the entire franchise's history, as recently discovered by a Reddit user. However, there is a caveat—inflation rates are also taken into account.
