Amazon Is Seriously Considering Making a Sequel to 007 First Light

Released by IO Interactive at the end of last month, 007 First Light has become not only possibly the best James Bond game to date but also a major success for both the developers and Amazon, who hold the rights to the franchise. Recently, it was also revealed that the game sold 2.7 million copies across all platforms in its first week.

Following this success, representatives of Amazon recently made a rather controversial statement suggesting that IO Interactive might not be involved in developing a potential sequel. However, sometime later, the company once again discussed the possibility of partnering with the developers, and a recent interview has only heightened hopes for a new installment of 007 First Light.

Recently, Jeff Gattis, Amazon's Head of Gaming—the same person who supposedly announced that another studio would be developing the new 007 First Light game—in the interview with IGN clarified his statement, explaining that his words were misunderstood. Furthermore, Gattis acknowledged that 007 First Light turned out to be so successful and well-received by players that there seems to be a strong case for creating a sequel. You can find the key points from his interview below:

“First of all, let me set the record straight for you. I did not confirm that Amazon Game Studios is publishing the next one. Did not say that. So unfortunately, it got picked up, and once it runs, it runs. No, IO's been great. They've been great partners. In fact, I was over there visiting them in Copenhagen a couple of months ago. The game's doing great. Let's let the game breathe and have its day.

Trust that we're going to be smart about this. I mean, it's market appetite. As long as we feel there's a desire for players to have the game, it’s safe to say it's going to be made. Seems like a sequel should be made.”

Despite the ongoing hype surrounding 007 First Light and its potential sequel, it’s not certain that IO Interactive will return to developing a new game in the series. After all, the studio's CEO, Hakan Abrak, recently confirmed that following the release of 007 First Light, the studio will focus on their upcoming online project, Project Fantasy, as well as a new installment in the Hitman franchise. Nevertheless, the developers will continue supporting the game with new content and have recently announced the details of the Year One update, which will include new TacSim challenges, a new gadget, New Game+, photo mode, path tracing support, and much more. In addition, the first expansion was announced at Summer Game Fest, featuring the return of Bawma, played by Lenny Kravitz.
