God of War Creator David Jaffe Criticized the New Game about Faye - Fans Already Responded

The recent State of Play show delighted fans with a wealth of announcements and the presentation of new gameplay trailers. The main event was the announcement of God of War Laufey - a new spin-off of the franchise dedicated to Faye, which had long been rumored.

Santa Monica Studio showed more than 20 minutes of God of War Laufey gameplay, confirming that the events of the game take place shortly after the opening scene of God of War (2018) and essentially run parallel to the game. Fans were impressed by the spectacular combat system, improved graphics and detail, as well as the performance of actress Deborah Ann Woll—but there were also those who did not like the game.

We are talking about David Jaffe, one of the creators of the franchise, who left Santa Monica in 2007, shortly after the release of God of War 2. Like many others, he watched State of Play live, streaming on YouTube, and he spoke very negatively about the God of War Laufey showcase. In his opinion, the game looks terrible, does not resemble God of War, and will sell poorly. More comments from Jaffe you can check out below:

“That looks like sh*t, I'm gonna be honest with you. Reminds me of that game Forspoken.

Here's the first thing I’m thinking when I watch that trailer. It feels to me like it has become a producer's studio. Cory is staggeringly talented. He is a much better writer than I ever was. He's a smart guy. It feels very much like he got forced into a situation where it's like ‘we can’t give you money to make a brand-new thing; you try to do what you want, but do it in the context of God of War.’ I’m just making this sh*t up. I don't know if that's why it looks that way. It just feels so uninspired and so dull. It's dead. That game is not going to do well for what they expect it to do.

This just feels like Cory or somebody wanted to write a fantasy story. You’ve lost the gore and violence of the first game. You’ve lost the character — you already lost him after 2018 because he changed so much he wasn’t Kratos anymore — now you’ve lost the identifiable mythology of it. You’ve lost me with the cube and the little Disney character at the beginning. It just seems like a fantasy.

If they had taken God of War off the title, and you didn’t know the God of War story and there wasn’t Kratos, it was just a story about a goddess who died, you wouldn’t be talking about it… This looks like more of the same sh*t. really f*cking goofy, man. Nobody pulled somebody aside and said, ‘This is not God of War.’I don’t know what the f*ck it is.

It looks dull, it looks repetitive, it looks like it's been there, done that. The cover is terrible. The name is terrible. It looks like forspoken. It’s got that flavor to it; it feels very uninspired.”

This is not the first time David Jaffe has criticized God of War. Earlier, he stated that he does not like how Kratos develops in the new games and, like many others, called the first image from the Amazon adaptation "terrible." But in the context of God of War Laufey, fans disagreed with the opinion of the former series developer, and some of the comments you can check out below:

The gameplay of God of War Laufey confirmed earlier leaks that Faye will have a companion in the form of a magical cube, and the combat system will become faster thanks to the presence of a two-handed sword. In addition, many divine creatures will appear in the game, including the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and the Mongol/Tibetan deity Begtse, and the ability of aerial attacks will also return.
