Plants vs Zombies 3 Returns — Early Access Signals Long-Awaited Global Launch
After more than six years of development and multiple redesigns, Plants vs Zombies 3 may finally be nearing a global release. Electronic Arts and PopCap Games have brought Plants vs Zombies 3: Evolved back into early access, starting with a rollout in Ireland and the Philippines.
A Reworked Return
The latest version stays true to the franchise’s signature lane-based tower defense gameplay, while introducing new mechanics and systems. The story once again features Dr. Zomboss, this time tied to a mysterious meteorite connected to Crazy Dave and a new merging mechanic.
This early access build reflects several major changes. The focus has shifted toward longer levels, more strategic battles, and deeper plant mastery. Some previously introduced features, such as avatars, have been removed in favor of a more classic lawn-defense experience reminiscent of earlier titles.
A Long and Uncertain Development Cycle
The road to this point has been far from smooth. The game first appeared in soft launch in 2020, only to be pulled shortly after for major revisions. It briefly returned in 2021 before disappearing again for several years.
In January 2024, the game re-entered early access in select regions, but was once again removed in October 2024 as EA prepared another overhaul. Throughout 2025, reports hinted at major changes, including adjustments to the art style, regional testing in China, and even a separate project titled Plants vs Zombies Reloaded.
Early Access and Future Plans
Players in Ireland and the Philippines can now try the latest version on Android and iOS via the Google Play Store and App Store. More regions are expected to gain access in the coming months, leading up to a potential global launch later this year.
With its latest rework, Plants vs Zombies 3: Evolved could finally be on track to deliver the experience fans have been waiting for.
