Former PlayStation Developer Revealed How Much Profit Sony Made by Releasing Their Games on PC
As we know, earlier this year it was confirmed Sony has changed their strategy about releasing PlayStation exclusives on PC; therefore, upcoming video games will be exclusives for PlayStation 5. Recent research has revealed that Sony didn’t make much profit from releasing their games on PC a few years later after their initial launch, and that is likely the main reason why the company decided to stop making ports to PC.
Furthermore, a new report from a reliable source, specifically, a person who worked on PlayStation, has revealed how much Sony has actually earned from releasing exclusive titles on PC—and the amount is not impressive. As revealed by Jerry Lui on his LinkedIn page, he worked as PC Planner & Insights Manager at PlayStation for 2 years and 6 months, helping to manage operations for the PlayStation PC group. In his “Experience” section, we can see that he helped Sony to make a net revenue from $0 to 300 million in years—this is how much the company earned from releasing multiple titles on PC. More information from his experience working at PlayStation 5 you can also check out below:
Manage all business operations functions for PS PC group, helping the unit grow from $0-300M in Net Revenue for Sony in 3 years.
- Optimized promotional strategy and forecasted FY budgets for PS PC’s multimillion dollar games portfolio
- Provided insight and business case to convince leadership to pursue more aggressive pricing strategy that helped to increase gross revenue of the business unit by 25%+
- Analyzed PS back catalog, identifying and valuing underutilized titles to bring to market.
- Developed all forecasting models, annual sales targets, and KPI reports/scorecards for PC business unit
This is another proof why Sony decided to stop porting their games to PC, as they are likely to spend more money on the development of the PC version than they actually earn. We also heard rumors that Ghost of Yotei was in development for PC before Sony decided to change its strategy and also that the studio was considering creating its own launcher for PC to avoid their games on Microsoft’s Project Helix. So far, it’s not more than speculation, and it looks like the upcoming games, like Saros, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, or Marvel’s Wolverine, will remain PlayStation 5 exclusives for now.
