The news was revealed during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, which was packed with announcements across a wide variety of franchises. Fans celebrated updates surrounding Mario’s 40th anniversary, including the reveal of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as well as the announcement of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. But the biggest surprise of the event was the return of one of Nintendo’s most unusual consoles: the Virtual Boy.

Virtual Boy Joins Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo confirmed that a selection of Virtual Boy games will be added to the growing Switch Online library early next year. This marks the first time many of these rare titles will be re-released since the console’s short-lived run in the mid-1990s. Only 22 Virtual Boy games were ever produced worldwide, making them some of Nintendo’s most elusive titles.

To accompany the launch, Nintendo debuted a new Virtual Boy-inspired accessory designed to hold a Switch or Switch 2 console, mimicking the look and feel of the original hardware.

Pricing and Release Date

A listing on Nintendo’s official online store has revealed the prices for the two accessory versions:

  • Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch/ Switch 2: $99.99 USD
  • Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model): $24.99 USD

The full-sized model is styled after the original Virtual Boy headset, while the more affordable cardboard version is likely designed as a portable and budget-friendly alternative. Both accessories will launch on February 17, 2026, alongside the first wave of Virtual Boy games for Switch 2.

A Big Step for Switch Online

The addition of the Virtual Boy library is the latest step in Nintendo Switch Online’s expansion, following the recent introduction of Nintendo GameCube games as a Switch 2-exclusive feature. Fans can now revisit classics like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Soul Calibur II, as well as enjoy Switch 2 upgrades for modern titles such as Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
