Monster Train 2 Roadmap Revealed: Free Updates and Major Expansion Incoming

Shiny Shoe has officially shared the post-launch content roadmap for Monster Train 2, detailing a stream of upcoming updates—both free and paid. Following its initial announcement in February, PC players were treated to a free demo on Steam, building anticipation for the full release.

The game finally launched on May 21, making its debut on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Alongside that announcement came a dramatic new trailer that unveiled the sequel’s primary antagonists: the Titans—formidable foes determined to seize control of Heaven. With the original Monster Train having won over roguelike fans and critics alike, the sequel had big expectations to meet.

So far, Monster Train 2 has lived up to the hype. It recently surpassed 500,000 players, a milestone that Shiny Shoe marked with the unveiling of a detailed roadmap to maintain excitement and long-term engagement.

Update Timeline and Content Details

Q3 2025: The Lost Arsenal Update

The first update, titled Lost Arsenal, is set to arrive in the third quarter of 2025 and will be completely free. It introduces:

  • New cards for all clans
  • Clanless room cards and equipment
  • Rebalancing of legacy cards

This update is designed to enhance gameplay diversity and deepen the strategic options available to players, kicking off a three-phase post-launch content cycle.

Q4 2025: Unnamed Second Update

Coming in the fourth quarter of 2025, the second update has yet to be named but promises to elevate the challenge and depth further. Planned features include:

  • Void-themed threats
  • Stronger boss encounters
  • New gameplay mutators
  • Strategic artifacts
  • Cosmetic upgrades

Q1 2026: Major Expansion & New Game Mode

The most significant update is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026 and will introduce a mix of free content and a paid expansion. Although specific details are still under wraps, highlights will include:

  • A brand-new game mode
  • A completely new clan
  • Substantial additional content

Each update will also include routine bug fixes, balance adjustments, and localization updates, all informed by community feedback.

Community Reception and Growth

The roadmap builds upon the strong foundation laid at launch. Monster Train 2 currently enjoys an impressive 96% positive rating on Steam, and its concurrent player count recently hit 18,503, exceeding the original game’s all-time peak of 14,073, achieved over more than five years.

Additionally, Monster Train 2 has begun branching into cross-promotional territory. In May, the breakout deckbuilder Balatro announced a collaboration with Monster Train 2, showing just how much the franchise is expanding its influence.
