GOG Galaxy Is Getting a Major Overhaul and a Linux Version in 2027

GOG has announced a major overhaul of its GOG Galaxy launcher. The company is reworking the client for Windows and macOS and will release an official Linux version in 2027. GOG made the announcement during its first-ever showcase, held to celebrate the store’s 18th anniversary.

The updated client should be faster and easier to use. GOG promises quicker loading, smoother navigation, and a simpler interface. The library is getting new view options, improved filters, and dedicated sections for recently played and recently added games. The developers showed the first images of the new interface on all three systems but stressed that the design is still in development and may change.

At the same time, GOG Galaxy will remain optional. As before, players will be able to download and install DRM-free games directly from the GOG website without using the launcher at all.

The biggest part of the announcement is official Linux support. Players have been asking for it for years: the request on GOG’s community wishlist has gathered more than 44,000 votes. Back in January 2026, the company was looking for a developer to build Linux support into the client’s architecture, and in July it confirmed that work was underway. Now GOG has finally named a target release year.

For now, Linux users can download compatible games directly from the GOG website or manage their library through third-party launchers such as Heroic Games Launcher or Lutris. Details about the Linux version are still scarce. GOG hasn’t said which distributions it will support, whether cloud saves and achievements will work from day one, or whether the client will use Wine or Proton to run Windows games.

The announcement comes as Linux gaming keeps growing in popularity, driven mainly by Valve’s Steam Deck and SteamOS, and GOG clearly doesn’t want to fall behind its competitors.
