The Modder Who Fixed Elden Ring’s Co-Op Is Now Fixing the Game That Started It All

As phenomenal as FromSoftware games are, none of them have ever nailed co-op. You can’t simply invite a friend and start smashing enemies in Elden Ring. Instead, you need to be at the right spot, with the right password, and hope the stars align just to team up. Without Yui’s seamless co-op mod, Elden Ring’s multiplayer would be almost unplayable.

A few months ago, Yui improved co-op for Dark Souls 3 — and now, she's taken on one of FromSoftware’s most iconic titles: the original Dark Souls.

The first version of the Dark Souls Remastered seamless co-op mod dropped on Thursday, letting up to six players journey through the entire game together. “Simply put, the mod allows you to play with friends throughout the entirety of the game with no restrictions,” Yui explained on Nexus Mods. 🛡️

In the announcement video, it’s clear the system mirrors Elden Ring's mod. Players use a special inventory item to summon friends into their world at any point. Beating bosses won't break up the squad like it normally does, and everyone can interact with NPCs freely. It just works.

“Dark Souls 1 was my first Dark Souls game and it has a special place in my heart,” Yui shared with Polygon over DMs. She also pointed out that the interconnected world design makes it a perfect fit for seamless co-op.

Yui mentioned this project was a lot easier compared to Elden Ring's mod, but it wasn't without challenges. Since Dark Souls came out over a decade ago and wasn’t designed for open-world play, standard co-op is blocked by fog doors and limited map loading. Yui had to reverse-engineer the game to prevent areas from unloading when players moved too far from the host — a tricky process that required some deep technical wizardry. 🛠️

Despite the hurdles, it only took Yui about a week to get the mod fully operational. It’s live now and working great, but she plans to keep patching any bugs until it's flawless.

Setting up the mod is simple: unzip a few files into the correct folder, choose a shared password, and you're good to go. Then it’s time to gather your crew and explore Lordran like never before. And don’t worry about bans — the mod operates independently of FromSoftware’s servers and uses separate save files. Your posse of Chosen Undead is completely safe. ⚔️
