Minecraft’s Adorable New Pet Ghasts Are Coming in 2025 — And They’re More Than Just Cute

The latest Minecraft Live event unveiled a wave of upcoming content for later this year, but one surprise in particular stole the spotlight — the dried ghast block. At first glance, it might look like just another quirky addition, but developers suggest it’s one of the most imaginative features the game has seen in a while.

While Minecraft has always embraced creative ideas, its content model has evolved in recent years. Mojang has shifted away from large, once-a-year updates and now delivers smaller, themed "content drops" throughout the year. This new approach allows for faster, more flexible content releases and keeps the player experience fresh and exciting — while also avoiding the disappointment that sometimes followed underwhelming major updates in the past.

The second content drop of 2025 centers entirely around the ghast, a familiar yet eerie mob from the Nether. This time, though, players will encounter a brand-new variant: the dried ghast block. Found buried beneath the sands of the Soul Sand Valley, these blocks function like any ordinary block — except for one small twist: they're alive.

Once players transport them to the Overworld and submerge them in water, the dried ghasts begin to rehydrate. Over time, they start to smile, then transform into ghastlings — baby ghasts that are not only completely harmless, but also adorably curious about their surroundings.

And it gets better: players can feed these ghastlings snowballs, helping them grow into fully-grown happy ghasts. These joyful creatures aren’t just pets — they’re rideable! Equipped with saddles, they can carry multiple players through the skies, introducing a whole new way to travel.

But happy ghasts aren’t just for transportation. Their ability to float and allow players to dismount onto their backs gives them an unexpected utility in survival building — functioning as mobile scaffolding, perfect for high builds or on-the-go construction.

All of this is set to arrive as part of Minecraft’s second major content drop of 2025. Between the charm of pet ghasts and their surprisingly useful gameplay implications, this feature is shaping up to be a fan favorite — and proof that even one block can change everything.
