While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an impressive game, it wasn’t without its issues, particularly with low-res textures. Many players were disappointed by these visuals, especially given the game's potential. However, thanks to modders like Romi, FF7 Rebirth’s PC version is getting the polish it deserves. It’s a reminder of one of the great aspects of PC gaming — players can rely on mods to fix or improve areas that developers may overlook.

The new texture pack is compatible with Romi's previous HD Texture Pack, which focuses on improving the game's outdoor environments. This new pack doesn’t overlap with the previous one, allowing players to enjoy both without conflict.

To install the 21GB texture pack, players simply need to download it and place the three files into the designated folder in the game directory. It’s a straightforward process that should be accessible even to those not deeply familiar with modding.

Along with the texture pack, Romi also suggests additional mods that can improve the overall experience. For instance, FF7RebirthFix provides features like a customizable field of view (FOV), unlocked frame rates, and support for ultrawide or narrow displays. It also addresses issues with shadow cascades, which previously caused distracting shadow changes during gameplay.

For a truly unique experience, Romi’s first-person mod lets players explore the world of FF7 Rebirth in first-person, adding a fresh perspective to the game. While the mod automatically switches to a third-person view during combat, the first-person exploration mode feels like an official addition to the game.

As for the game’s performance, FF7 Rebirth runs better than its predecessor, FF7 Remake, though there are still some performance hiccups. While shader compilation stutters remain a problem, traversal stutters are less frequent. Keyboard and mouse support during exploration and combat is solid, though some mini-games are nearly impossible to play with this control setup — especially the piano mini-game. Additionally, menu navigation could be improved, as mouse support is not yet available.

Despite some quirks, FF7 Rebirth on PC feels better than its predecessor and benefits from the modding community's efforts to enhance the experience. With Romi's texture pack and other mods, the game is looking and playing better than ever.
