Dota 2 Launches Dark Carnival Event With New Rewards, Story Campaign, and Automaton Heroes
Valve has officially launched Dark Carnival, Dota 2's newest seasonal event, bringing a free story campaign, collectible rewards, new cosmetic content, and several gameplay features inspired by last year's Crownfall event.
The update went live on June 25, with players now able to jump into the event through the in-game client.
Earn Tickets by Playing Matches
Dark Carnival introduces a new progression system built around Carnival Tickets.
Players earn different ticket types simply by playing Dota 2 matches, with the rewards depending on the hero they choose. Tickets can then be exchanged for a variety of event rewards, encouraging players to experiment with different heroes throughout the event.
The update also includes a brand-new comic that follows the story of Prokhvostka and Tresdin, expanding the event's narrative.
Free Story With Optional Premium Content
Valve confirmed that the entire main Dark Carnival storyline is available for free.
Players looking for additional content can purchase optional story branches for $15, unlocking extra quests and rewards without restricting access to the core event.
I think keeping the main campaign free is the right approach, especially after the positive reception to Crownfall's accessible progression system.
New Automaton Heroes and Cosmetic Rewards
Dark Carnival adds a large collection of cosmetic content, including:
- Five new Automaton Heroes, mechanical reimaginings of classic Dota heroes featuring unique animations, effects, icons, and visual updates.
- 20 brand-new cosmetic item sets.
- Additional themed rewards unlocked through event progression.
According to the official event page, players can also collect exclusive prizes by completing various event objectives and redeeming their earned tickets.
A New Seasonal Adventure
Dark Carnival continues Valve's recent trend of combining narrative storytelling with gameplay progression, giving players both a comic-style adventure and plenty of cosmetics to unlock while simply playing matches.
I can see the ticket system becoming one of the event's biggest strengths since it rewards regular gameplay rather than forcing players into specific game modes.
The Dark Carnival event is now live in Dota 2, with more rewards waiting to be discovered as players progress through the festival.
