DDoS Attack on Team Spirit – What Happened?

Grand Final of DreamLeague Season 25 Postponed Due to DDoS Attack 1

The DreamLeague S25 grand final was played in a best-of-5 format, making it a prime target for a DDoS attack. The match started smoothly, with both teams connecting and selecting their heroes. Team Spirit won the first game in a close battle, while Tundra Esports responded strongly in game two, equalizing the score. Team Spirit secured victory in game three, but things took a dramatic turn in game four.

At 18 minutes into game four, Team Spirit called for a technical pause, after which players "Larl" and "Collapse" were disconnected due to a DDoS attack. This issue persisted for nearly two hours, as both players repeatedly failed to restore their connection.

When it seemed like the situation was under control and game four was set to be restarted, Team Spirit’s captain, "Miposhka," also experienced similar connectivity issues. Following the pause, Team Spirit’s official X (Twitter) account released a statement confirming that their players had faced a DDoS attack targeting the Steam accounts of Collapse and Larl. The organization further stated that the attack was made possible due to a vulnerability in Steam/Dota 2.

What Is a DDoS Attack?

For those unfamiliar with the term, a DDoS attack (Distributed Denial-of-Service) is a form of cyberattack in which a hacker overwhelms a server with excessive internet traffic, rendering it inaccessible to users. In this case, players reported being spammed with hundreds of Steam invitations, which caused Dota 2 to crash due to the excessive number of requests.

When Will the DreamLeague S25 Grand Final Resume?

As the match could not continue, ESL decided to postpone it. The score remains 2-1 in favor of Team Spirit, meaning the game will resume from map four.

The DreamLeague Season 25 grand final will continue on March 4, 2025, at 17:00 EET. Be sure to tune in to the official broadcast and support your favorite team!
