Sony wants to improve the immersion in the Metaverse from smartphones

The well-known publication Bloomberg reported that the Japanese tech giant represented by Sony is currently developing an interesting project that will allow users to improve the user experience of immersion in the world of metaverses. Their new device will be called Mocopi.

The Japanese are developing motion trackers that can be used on mobile devices running Android and iOS operating systems. Their new device will be able to influence the development of the metaverse sphere, since from the moment such a device is released, not only computer owners, but also phone owners will be able to fully immerse themselves in the world of virtual universes.

What will be the new device? According to Sony, their Mocopi device will consist of six pucks that will need to be put on different parts of you in order for the movements to be synchronized at a good level. One puck will be on the user's head, another on the hips, two on the ankles, and two on the wrists. After users put on these motion sensors, their animation in the virtual world will be played more realistically, and the process of interacting with other users will become enjoyable.

Set of 6 Mocopi trackers

At the moment, it is known for sure that Sony is developing Mocopi for use in their Sony Metaverse. About the possibility of compatibility of the device with other metaverses, the question still remains open.

Sony has already named a price for this device and a release date. The release of Mocopi will take place in January next year, and everyone will be able to purchase a motion sensor for a price tag of $360. The Japanese tech giant says the release of Mocopi could be a big event for the company in the field of developing devices related to virtual and augmented reality.

Previously, Sony took steps towards virtual reality and released a VR helmet called the PlayStation VR. It is suitable for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. At the moment, it is also known that the second version of the helmet called PlayStation VR 2 is in development, and the experience of using it should be much better than in the case of PlayStation VR.

Although Sony's Metaverse and VR applications have not yet found a large audience, becoming a niche product in the global gaming market, the Japanese company does not lose hope and believes that in the future it will be able to move into the virtual universe sector and find a mass user for its product. They enlisted the support of talented developers who will have to provide all possible assistance in achieving their goal. By the way, the release of Mocopi from Sony will help the Japanese achieve two goals at once. Firstly, they will be able to get the status as one of the developers of software for virtual universes, which will help them strengthen their position in the global market. Secondly, the tech giant will launch a new product in the market of peripheral devices for smartphones, which will also expand the range of their activities.

This is not the first time in 2022 that Sony has made attempts to conquer the sphere of the metaverse and Web 3.0 technologies. Previously, the Japanese tech giant filed for a patent to create digital assets, among which were some “moments of the gameplay of a video game, such as video clips and images.” Thus, Sony wants to create a new type of non-fungible tokens that will contain memorable moments of streamers in the form of NFT tokens. In addition, Sony wants to convert some game items, characters, things, and more into a non-fungible token format.

Their patent, which has been applied for, is called “tracking unique in-game digital assets using tokens in a distributed ledger.” Looking ahead, it is worth mentioning that in the gaming industry, the adoption of NFT tokens and immersion in the world of cryptocurrencies is usually quite acute for gamers.

Continuing the theme of Sony's development this year towards the metaverse, it is also worth recalling the purchase of Beyond Sports, which creates high-quality 3D animation using real data. Their developments with the company Hawk-Eye Innovations, acquired by the Japanese in 2011, will allow sports to be held in the metaverse. Such plans were announced by Sony during the purchase of Beyond Sports. Speaking about the issue of accepting NFT tokens among gamers, we can recall several not very pleasant incidents for developers. As clear examples of the rejection of non-fungible tokens by gamers, we can name the cases with Ubisoft and GSC Game World.

A French game development and publishing studio wanted to add NFT tokens to their projects from the Tom Clancy's series, but the players strongly protested and Ubisoft was forced to abandon such an idea and return to their standard monetization model.

The sale of game NFT items, as conceived by Ubisoft, should have looked like this

As for the Ukrainian game studio GSC Game World, they announced the addition of non-fungible tokens to the STALKER 2 game, which gamers from all over the world have been waiting for 15 years. Users, just as in the case of Ubisoft games, reported that they did not want to see such things in the long-awaited title and the studio had to announce the cancellation of their similar innovations, since their reputation is more expensive than ideas.

Rockstar Games was also involved in the story with cryptocurrency assets. The latter recently reported that they do not want to see situations on the GTA Online and Red Dead Online servers due to which players trade cryptocurrencies with each other. They said that they want the development of the sphere of non-fungible tokens, but they see it in an adequate manifestation, and not in the form of gambling and deceit.

In addition, it became known that Strauss Zelnick, the head of Rockstar Games publishing house Take-Two, will have direct bitcoin bonuses, but how they will be implemented is still unknown. There are also rumors that Grand Theft Auto VI will have tasks that will reward players not only with in-game currency, but also with the equivalent in bitcoins.

How will Sony affect the world of the metaverse and the adoption of NFTs? The future will show, and we can only observe these events.
