Sony wants to compete in the metaverse
Sony has announced the acquisition of Beyond Sports, an organization that transforms sports images into 3D objects in the metaverse and creates animations. The acquisition cost the Japanese tech giant $70,000,000 and the collaboration will allow the companies to further leverage Beyond Sports' expertise with what Hawk-Eye Innovations does. The latter, by the way, were acquired by a Japanese company in 2011.
Now Sony faces an interesting challenge. The company wants to host real-time sporting events in the world of the metaverse. The competition will cover various sports. Sony wants users to take part in football, basketball, tennis and baseball matches. Hawk-Eye Innovations has already found a way to accurately determine the position of the ball during a match. It is heavily used by the National Football League and the National Hockey League.
In the event that Sony can do what they want, then the collaboration with Beyond Sports and Hawk-Eye Innovations will definitely pay off. Thus, it will not be difficult to reproduce an accurate simulation of a match in real time in virtual worlds. In this way, sports fans can easily visit the competitions of their favorite sports.
Sony is currently developing its own VR headset, which will be designed for the PlayStation game consoles. They already have the first version of the VR helmet, which has both pros and cons. In the second version, the virtual reality helmet will be upgraded, but most likely its cost will also be raised. PlayStation VR 2 is scheduled to release in February 2023. As expected, the VR headset will only be compatible with Sony game consoles.
