CS2's Real Season 5 Update Reworks Bomb Damage, Not Just the Map Pool

Valve shipped the actual CS2 Season 5 client update on July 8, and the biggest change in it isn't the map pool, it's a full redesign of how bomb explosions deal damage. Explosion damage no longer applies instantly across a radius. Instead, patch notes describe a shockwave that expands from the blast's center, with corners dissipating it and walls cutting its force based on values precomputed for each map's compiled geometry. A new survival probability indicator now shows players their odds of living through a detonation before it happens.

That's a bigger structural change than any single weapon buff, since it touches every retake and post-plant situation on every map at once, not just the one map getting swapped in or out of Active Duty. Cache still replaces Overpass in the Active Duty pool, a change our site already covered, and the same update adds five community maps: Boulder, Fachwerk, and Shelter for Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch, plus Debris and El Dorado for Wingman.

Armory rotated four new collections in: the Spy Tech and Arabesque weapon sets, the latter pulled from a community Call to Arms submission, alongside Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing stickers. Train 2025, Sport & Field, Sugarface 2, and Elemental Craft all rotated out of redemption. No Cache-themed Armory set shipped with this patch, despite speculation ahead of launch.

CS2's Real Season 5 Update Reworks Bomb Damage, Not Just the Map Pool 1

I think the bomb rework says more about Valve's design priorities than the map or skin changes combined. A shockwave that respects walls and corners answers years of complaints about dying to bomb damage through solid cover with no way to see it coming, and Valve chose to ship that fix in the same patch as a map pool refresh instead of holding it for its own announcement. I'd read that timing as Valve wanting the bomb change to land quietly inside a bigger update rather than become the headline on its own.
